THE COMBINED PARTIES.
KttiTon lUiu.r.TiK: -It is; now two
weeks since the platform of tlio Mc
clianica' fc WorkiDgmcti's Political
Protective Union was made public,
nnd it stands nt least n document
from honest worUitifrmcn inviting
honest criticism. This it is having
by tho AntMIawaiinn 1'nrly main
taining a silence far more eloquent
than any mend of praise or criticism
they might bestow. -It is an honor
to the Union, even though they
never put forward a candldalo to
back it. Hut tho Union also intends
that tho platform shall back tho
candidate. Every word in that
platform the Union mean, big and
strong. Dy their fruit yo shall know
them, and tho platforms of both tho
M. & W. V. P. Union and tho Ha
waiian Political Association furnish
no bumps for the Anti-Hawaiian
Party to hang their lint on. When
the candidates aro put forward they
know there will be more chance to
pick their opponents to pieces ;
with month opon tlicy now stand
ready to shout, "Going back to the
old regime." An man that opens
his mouth in behalf of the native,
this is tho first deal he gels.
The Hawaiian Political Associa
tion and M. & W. P. P. Union arc
malting a brave effort to heal in the
coming elections tho race distrust
that has been sown during tho pro
sent administration, aud should bo
backed in their efforts by every
well-wisher of tho country. They
arc not a set of political wire pull
ers, holding back for tho balance of
power at the polls. Let the writer
of that suggestion inyestorday morn
ing's P. U. A. put it in his pocket.
He can't get there. Both oraanizn
tions aro composed of'.cilizcns con
ocious of the Might o tho Right,
nnd know that they will win at tho

PROHIBITION IN THE DAKOTAS.
( Furnished by
No saloon-keeper will stand ns
god-father to tho temperance nnd
morality plank adopted by tho South
Dakota Republicans assembled in
convention at Huron last week :
"Recognizing the pernicious influ
ences of tho trafllc in 'intoxicating
liquors upon every intorcst of our
commonwealth, wo favor national
and state prohibition of such trafllc,
and the adoption of the nrtiole of
our constitution relating thereto,
and tho enactment and enforcement
of such laws as will make the samo
effective." Mr. Kearney, of Law
rence, presented a minority report
signed by four delegates. It de
clared that "the Republican party
has over stood the friend of tomper
ancc and morality, nnd indorses all
wiso means of mitigation." The
minority report was tabled by a vote
of three hundred and fifty-four yeas
to ninety-four nays. This shows
tho pulse rate of prohibition in
South Dakota, The question burns
right upon the hearts of tho votors.
J Later. Noith Dakota's fight
with the liquor-sellers is yot to come.
They were caught napping on elec
tion day, but wore thoroughly
awakened b' the returns, nnd are
preparing to contest the legality of
the prohibition cnaetnicnt, upon tho
ground that the votes cast for it
were not equal to a majority of those
cast for the constitution.
Their claim cannot possibly hold,
as prohibition was submitted in a
separate clause, in order to free tho
constitution from all embarrass
ments, and secure an untrammeled
expression of the will of the people.
Mr. Goodkind, a prominent distiller
in North Dakota, declares lie will
push his protest to tho White HotiBe.
and lay it before President Harrison.
In South Dakota, tho outlook is
bright for rigorous enforcement.
Governor Mellette, in a loiter to The
Voico.says : "Our people know whnt
legislation is for to repress evil.
License is a failure in practico and
a fraud in prinoiple. An evil should
not be practiced under sanction of
law. Jf not an evil, it does not
demand restriction. Tho law will
bo enforced in both Dakotas with
more satisfactory results than in any
other states of tho Union." Tho
spico of rashness in this promise to
outdo oven Kansas, betokens en
thusiasm in tho right direction, and
argues ill for tho Dakota rumsellcr.
