Editor Uui.ixtik: Tlio sudden
nntl fetvent aloha for tho political
rights of tho Hawaiian professed by
tho organization styling itself tho
Mechanics' and Workingmcii's Po
litical Union, may serve to catch a
few Aotes front among our lato com
ers, but thoso of us who hac been
hero longer know that it is all bosli
and humbug.
I have been a close obsoivcr of
the situation for eight years, and
especially of the relations existing
between the natives and the haoles,
and I have yet to meet the first Ha
waiian who feels that ho has been or
is bclngrobbed of his inheritance,
or crushed under the iion heel of
missionary rule or of a "family
compact." I except, of course, tho
few vtliom wo all know, whoso ambi
tion has led them to seek positions
of trust and responsibility in which
they have proven themselves wholly
unworthy nnd incompetent.
Hut to me the most significant fca
ttue in the case is the chataclcr of
tho men who hae become leaders
in this army of leformers and eman
cipators, whose aim is to strike off
the shackles from the bleeding
bands and feel of the poor down
trodden native. A set of men who
in 1887, when the ship of state was
on the reef, and on tho verge of be
ing a hopeless wreck, refused to
lend a helping hand to save her, or
to give a word of cheer to those who
manned the lifeboat and did the
woik, but havo from that day to this
done nought but curse the ministry,
thus hindering the work of recon
struction and reform, giving no cre
dit for good accomplished, magnify
ing ever)' misstep or partial failure
in the arduous and difficult work
undertaken. Men who on the 30th
of July last held a neutral position,
setting an example of patriotism
which had all followed it, our gov
ernment would have been a total
wreck, w itli the fragments in the
hands of Wilcox, Bo3'd, Maikham
and company, and the end have
been, God only knows what. These
are the leaders of the patty who
have just discovetcd that they have
been raised up in the order of "di
vine providence" to emancipate the
poor enslaved Ilawaiians. And as
an earnest of their appieciation of
the solemn and weighty mission en
trusted to them they have chosen,
in their committee on nominations,
at least four professional bartendeis
and gin-slingers men, a part of
whose daily employment is to
compound cheap die stuffs in imita
tion of whisky and gin, such as will
craze the brain of the poor native
and yet come within the reach of
Ids meagre earnings. That such
men exist oven in civilized commu
nities wo know, but how such men
can Have the consummate cheek to
pose before a community as reform
ers and philanthropists it is hard to
explain, and that too in a country
whose affairs have, for two and one
half years, been managed with a de
gree of success unparalleled in its
history, where every respectable in
dustry has prospered, and where even
the saloon, the most degraded of all
human employments, has prospered,
and its death-dealing and soul-damning
influences sull'eicd to go on un
molested. I am unwilling to believe that tho
more intelligent, sober, and law
abiding laboiing men nnd mechanics
will be found, at the coining elec
tions, casting their votes with such
men organized under whatever name
the' may be.
