THURSDAY, DEC. ID, 1P89.
It is reported that a law suit over
the possession of forty acres of land,
which w as begun tw o years before
Columbus discovered America, has
just been settled in Warsaw, Poland,
between two branches of the ancient
Isbieski family. The settlement
came in August, 1888, by the equal
partition of the land after litigation
extending through four centuries.
What a host of law .vera must have
been kept out of other mischief by
We acknowledge with thanks the
receipt, from the Minister of the In

gister ef the Hawaiian Islands, 1887

for Nobles and Representatives aj.
the general election of 1887 and the
special election of a Noble for Oahu
in 1888. Names of voters in alpha
betical order, with ages, places of
birth, occupation, and registry
marka, are given for eveiy ward or
precinct in the Kingdom. The Re
gister is a ponderous tome 17 by 1 1
by 3 inches; the clerical woik was
done by Dr. Rodgers, the mechan

Voters should see if their names aie
on the register for their wards, so
that if accidentally omitted they
may have the mistake rectified at

As a monarch, Emperor Dotn
Pedro of Brazil had a good name
abroad and was much beloved at
home. He ruled for fifty-eight
years, which are marked by great
progress in his empire. The coun
try advanced mightily in all the ele
ments of modern civilization under
liberal and generous legislation
that wan encouKigcd by the
imperial administtalion. Slavery
was peacefully abolished bv act
of the Legislature on May 14,
1888, uudei the regency of Princess
Isabella dining the absence of the
Emperor for his health in Euiope.
Republicanism had been growing
steadily for many years before it
culminated in the overthrow of the
empire last month. It seems that
the occasion for the revolutionary
growth was, however, not in any un
popularity of the Empeior, but in a
strong dislike of thcCroiyri Princess,
her husband, the Orleans Prince
Count d'Eu, aLd their children.
Probably the disaffection in this re
gard was fomented in a large de
gree by those of the European colo

THE GOVERNMENT POLICY.
1 n last issue appeared the Cabinet's
statement of policy, in reply to the
llito Reform committee, for the
copy of which we tuc indebted to
the courtesy of Ills Excellency L.
A. Thurston, Minister of Intciior.
The document, it will be seen,
covers ten distinct items of policy,
which open up a wide enough Held
for discussion between this and
election day. It is now competent
for opponents and independent ob
servers of the administration to
criticise these declarations, to com
pare them with the Ministry' re
cord, to challenge either the sound
ness of the policy or the sincerity of
the Ministers with regard to cither
tlio whole or the pait. Having, hi
a more direct and complete manner
than any Uuttaiian Ministry has
ever before done, so fur as wc are
aware, declared their policy for the
luture as matter to be jjdged witli
their record, the Ministers have ac
cepted all the issues of the' general
election. If given a renewal of the
pooplc's confidence the Ministers
will be bound by the terms of their
present manifesto. Should they
neglect to redeem these pledges, it
would be the duty of the Legislature
to withdraw conlldcncc from thcin.
If unable to lead the Legislature on
the lines mopped out, it would be
the duty of the Ministry to resign.
