Ity Galileo II.
"Let every man remember that
'free votes for nil means good gov
ernment for all," says the Elele.
Rather hard to induce men of ex
perience and reflection to swallow
this doctrine. They don't believe a
word of it. Free votes for all may
be a very good thing, but not so
good as to bo a panacea for all gov
ernmental ills. I recently met a
gentleman of education And intelli
gence whose home and interest were
in a country of "free votes for all,"
who, in summing up his experiences
in that country, said, "I have suf
fered from drought, rabbits and
bad government, and from bad gov
ernment mast of all."
"Constitutional Government is
hardly two years old in this coun
try." The foregoing is quoted
from the Dnily P. C. Advertiser of
the 16th instant, and following it,
iu the same article nnd the same
paragraph, nro several sentences de
pendent upon the one quoted, and
being dependent upon it arc neces
sarily about as far from the truth.
Hut at present I have to do with the
cjuointion only. Was it ignoranoe
or was it a desire to mislead thai
prompted it? 1 am at a loss to de
cide which, hut will charitably sup
pose the former. Just fancy any
one saying Hint "constitutional gov.
ernment is hardly two years old in
this country," when the very con
stitution which was adopted two
years ago, and which is now our
fundamental law, was fully three
fourths copied from a constitution
which was tho fundamental law of
the cqiintry for over twenty year
immediately preceding ! I have no
wish to deny that tho present con
stitution, with its sundry delects, i
better than its predecessor, but hold
that to call it the commencement of
constitutional governrasnt for the
country is n direct perversion of Uie
plain aud indiBputablo truth, known
to everybody who lived here before
the ilQtu of June, 1887. Any equally
prepostorous statements -preposterous
because untrue wouldn't sur
prise me a bit if mnde by tiic Klele,
because use leads mo to apply regu-'
I uly once a weak, to that source for
truth capsized, but coming from the
P. C. A., as Uiis docs, my breath is
completely taken away thereby.
I was tho other night thrown acci
dentally among a parcel of peda
gogues. (If I had thrown myself '
intentionally into such 'company,
