TUESDAY, DEC. :1, 1P89.
TAHITI STEAM LINE.
Mr. C. T. Cognet (II. II. M. Con
sul at Tahiti), in a letter addressed
to this morning's P. C. Advertiser,
endeavors to make it appear that
the negotiations, now pending be
tween the French Government and
the Messaircries Maritimes Com
pany, to carr3 the French mail to
Tahiti via Sydney and New Cali
donia, are not likely to be realised ;
adding, in proof thereof the asser
tion, that "This is the same question
that has been asked so many years
in Tahiti," etc.
Mr. C. T. Cognet and the late
Governor of Tahiti, Mr. Lacascade,
appear to hold widely different opin
ions on this question. Mr. Lacascade,
in a letter to the acting Governor of
Tahiti, dated Auckland, November
18th, 1889, states in reference to
the Messagcries Maritimes project
"I have confidence in the success of
these negotiations, and am convinced
that the new lino will realise the
hopes of our two Colonies of
Oceania." But, be it remembered,
Governor Lacascade has resided but
a few years in Tahiti and is, per
haps, not so competent to form an
opinion on this matter as is Mr.
Cognet.
It is ta be presumed that a com
pany establishing a steam line be
tween Honolulu and Tahiti would
expect to receive a subsidy. Docs
Mr. Cognet suppose thattlieTahitian
Government would subsidise two
lines? The writer would be much
pleased to see Tahiti connected with
these Islands by steam, subsidy or no
subsidy. The more practical ques
tion is, will steamship owners look
on the matter in a similar light?
