REPLY TO MAKAAINANA.
Km-roit 1Iui.i.i.tik: In an article
in your paper of Doc. 2Gth on "Poli
tics on Maui," by "Maknainnnn,"
there aro several misstatements which
should not pass unnoticed, as they
might cause considerable harm, lie
says that the political campaign is
being carried out with considerable
energy by both parties, that the
Opposition party works openly,
while the Government piuty keeps
its meetings seemt.
The first and only nieeliti" held
by the Government party wa on
iJec. 20th, and was advertised by
posters all over the country. This
dots not look like fccciecy. What
your correspondent probably refers
to, mid what everybody belonging
to the patty knew of, was the meet
ing of ti few iiilliienti.il leaders to
lorm a ticket to be pieseuted at the
convention, that the woik there
might be Inciiitnlcd, and the time
not occupied in debate upon the
availability of this or that one as
candidate. This custom has obtain
ed in Ameiiea lor many years, there
each paity has its conventions and
caucuses irrespective of the other,
and none but those in sympathy arc
allowed to speak or in any wuj" in
terfere with the meetings. Why
should it not be m) licit'? Another
misstatement is, where he speaks of
the meeting at l'aia skating rink, in
which he says that the house was
crowded, mostly by the employees
of II. 1. Baldwin, 'in the first place
the house was vcty far from being
crowded, as the people were seated
nil aiound the building, leaving the
entiic middle of the loom clear.
There wore about l.i() persons pre
sent, of whom tluec were in the em
ploy of II. 1. llaldwin. The audi
ence was largely composed of wo
men and children, who have no voice
in the elections, but perhaps by
their presence inspired the speakers
with patriotic feror. The meeting
was addressed by the persons
enumerated by your coi respondent,
but he fails to mention the name of
W. II. Ilaistcad, whose views so far
coincided with the views of the Gov
ernment party that they propose to
run him as their candidate for ite
pieseutative. Neither dipt, lleine
mann nor J. F. Noble spoke in favor
of the Workingmen's party or
against it. Cnpt. lleinemann's re
marks were principally confined to
the absurdity of having five parties
in the Held and upon the necessity
of uniting to elect a good man to re
present them. Jlr. Noble spoke of
Chinese restriction and advocated
such measures as would not inter
fere with the industrial pursuits of
the country. He also spoke iirfavor
of giving Ilawaiians the preference
for all ollices under the Government
which (other things being equal)
they were competent to fill. He also
advised them to strongly unite in
sending a good reliable man to re
Where your correspondent got his
items for his article (for he was not
at the meeting) is easy for those
living here to conjecture. Rut the
party is not as immaculate as they
would wish us to belice, they aie
not above practising the many de
vices of wily politicians to secure
adherents. J. F. Nodi.k.
