WKDXESDAY, FEB. 12, 1890.
To-day, February 12, U the
seventeenth mini vet snry of the ac
cession of King Kalakana. The
IHtli.uis wishes His Majesty many
happy returns of the occasion.
The latest mail brought the grati
fying news that Major Wi.ssimui had
telegraphed the German Government
the news of the safety of Dr. Peters,
the brave German explorer, whe was
reported massacred with hl party
The Advertiser's skilfully figured
consolation from the election re
turns seems, by its issue of to-day,
to be slipping away from it. It
really made us speechless to ee the
audacity of our contemporary in
claiming men for the Reform Parly
who defeated it own published Uc
form 1'artj' candidates.
Some interesting diplomatic coi-
respondence between the I nited
States and Mexico ba3 been pub
lished in the latter country and
communicated to Washington. The
Mexican Secretary of State resented
the talk of annexation to some ex
tent current in the States, laying
particular stiesi on the unreserved
utterance" of Gov. Waterman of
California in that regard. Secretary
Maine appeals in reply to the record
ol fifteen years, as signifying the
iwlicy of the United Slates. "That
policy," Mr. Blaine says, "is one
nf faithful and impaitial recognition
of the independence and
of the Mexican nation."
The Advertiser, by w.vy of fur
nishing what it calls "a little inno
cent amusement," has published a
purported translation of a National
Reform address Jo the Portuguese.
It is, however, a grossly garbled re
production, as the oiiginal English
and Portuguese printed address, to
be seen at this oilicc, prove to a
cursory pei tisal. Some paragraphs
uie omitted and others shamelessly
mutilated in the Advertiser's trans
lation. There is nothing of an
"amusing" nature to the Reform
Party in the real document. It con
tains points that the Advertiser
could not rjject in the campaign, or
since, but these are cither dropped
out of the false translation or slurred
over in a way to destroy their effect.
Jndeed, as it stands, the Advertis
er's publication is tantamount to a
wicked forgery. Yet the journal
that has fallen to such degradation
as to falsify documents in that way
quotes the circular, on the-strength
of its own lake version, as "an in
teresting illustration" of a campaign
of lying that it professes to con
demn! This is decidedly interesting.
The, "amusement" the Advertiser
linds in the exploit, however, could
only be realized by instincts devel
oped in following the rascally prin
ciple that everything i-. fair in po
litics. MEETING NOTICE.
