DANDER OF ELECTRICITY.
A friend has kindly furnished us
a copy .of the "American Analyst"
of November M, 1889, containing
nn article on "Flectrie Homicides."
This nrticle refers to and quotes
from n paper on the same subject
by 31r. Kdlson, the distinguished
electrician.
"Edtaon shows that there are four
different currents in use, of which
only one is harmless. This one is a
low tension current; the other three
aie high tension, and are. all danger
ous to life. The first Is harmless,
and can be passed through the
human body without producing un
comfortable sensations. The vecond
is dangerous to life. Momentary
contact with the third, results in
paralysis or death, and the passage
of the fourth, or alternating cur-
lent, through the living body mean?,
instantaneous death."
ICdNon positively asset ts that
neither of these dangerous currents
is a necessity. Says he, "there is
no plea which will justify the use of
high tension and' alternating cur
rents, either in a scientic or commer
cial sense." The sole reason why
these dangerous currents are em
ployed is said to be the economy of
ropper wire." The wires are t-o
small that tremendous pressure is
lequired to force the currents
through them over the long distances
which they supply. "With heavier
wires and shorter circuits all danger
would cease."
Kdi-sou N not favorable tn the under-ground
system. It is nut only
not safer, but is "positively more
dangerous. "This arici from the
fact that the wires in the present
'ystem of conduits, would form
earth eonlacts, and there would
lie a fusion of wires, and the forma
tion of powerful electric arcs, which
would extend to other metallic con
ductors in the same conduit, and a
whole mass of wires made to receive
this current and conduct it into
houses, olllees, and stores." The
article concludes by quoting from
Kdison the following: "The public
mav rest absolutely assured" that
safety will not be secured by bury
ing thee wires. The condensation
of moisture, the ingress of water,
the. dissolving iuthienco of coal gas
and oxidation upon the v.irious in
aulating compounds will result only
in the transfer of death to man
holes, houses, stores and offices,
through the agency of the telephone,
the low-pressure systems, and the
apparatus of the high-pressure cur
rent itself."
The important question tor us in
oinneclion with the above U, how
about our electric li 'lit wires here?

A CURIOS PHENOMENON.
A curious phenomenon, says the
llyogo News of tho lifith ult., was
observed last night at about nine
o'clock, a portion of the heavens
toivards the KaSt appearing suddenly
to open and emitting a dazzling
Hash ol light lasting several seconds,
and which distinctly lit up .swround
ing olijccls. The opening then
gradually closed, but for fully a
minute afterwaids there was a dull
Htreak of light, about the length of
:i comet's tail, to show where the
II ibh had appeared. Shortly after
wards the sky, which had before
been clear, becamo clouded over.
