German lolntilrj' la ouc of Utu tiio-it
hntiorltttil lnlllttiiy events of litis
century. "A gltti has been Intro
duced," he wiltcs, "which In every
ruspcut is superior to nil other guns.
This not is of the greatest import
ance, and cannot fail of a consider
able effect on iufanlry ladies, espe
cially ill the direction of tins more
frequent formations in line as com
pared with formations in columns."
It is the neiv stnull caliber repeating
gun of tbi! model of 1683 of which
lie writes, end which the Germans
uic contldcnt la superior in every
respect to the LebeJ gun, with which
the French Infantry recently weie
provided. If the arm answers ac
curately to its descriptions, its clU
ciencyns a death-dealer must be
conceded; whilo its vast superiority
to such an arm as the Springfield
single leader, which is still making
at the national arsenal on the Hill,
becomes apparent in point of weight,
size and murderous effect. Its tare
quality has been thus desciibcd:
From now on even tho stoutest
trees will give the foot oldier in bat
tle littlu protection, for the balls fioni
the new glum will idmpl p.iss light
thtuiigh the trunks. Six men in a
column, each tuxoii paces fjoin tho.
tnun befote him, may bo c hot through
with ono bullet, piovided that it
comes in contact with no metallic
substance on the persons of any of
them. The advantage that tho bullet
of thu new gun leaves only a small
hole behind it is compauitively in
significant. Moreover, should an
enemy, as has often hiipponed.dcfcnd
himself behind a village or court
yuid walls, ho will be protected only
in case the wall is remarkably slout,
for balls from new guns have ie
peatcdly penetrated with case walls
a brick and u half thick.
Mechanically considered, this
murderous weapon cannot he used
at all as a single loader. Its caliber
is but eight millimeters and its
range is 12,500 feet, or about SJGOO
feet greater than the range of the
arm it supplants. Its cartridges are
supplied in lots of live by means of
a tin frame of thu Mannlicher model ;
and the bullet has a lead kernel un
der a coating of steeUwith a nickel
covering over all. The piece is said
to he a sure shot at a kneeling man
1100 feel distant; or at two kneel
ing men side by side 1000 feet
away; while earth breastworks less
than 2 feet thick are no defense.
t Filially, this gun is very light, im
posing comparatively little hunleu
upon the soldier, and above nil it is
constructed for tiie use of tho new
smokeless powder. About 500,000
German soldiers havo thus far been
provided with the arm and the gun
factories of the German empire at
Spandau, Danzig and Erfurt will be
engaged in its manufacture until the
army of the fatherland is full1
equipped. Springfield Republi
