THAT OPEN LETTER AGAIN.
Editor HiLLLns:
Over the signature or,,'W.'W.llnll,
President K. O. Hull & Son, LtL,"
nu open letter addressed to the Min
ister of Finance by myself i ipioted
from and the real author whose
phrases and verbiage are easily re
cognized, proceeds to evade and bejr
the questions involved by stating
that "lie has not time, etc., etc.,"
in which to answer. Vague, and
general terms invariably "sod to
smother au overt act in the curious
intricacies and ramifications of a
"joint stock company, limited,"
will not answer in this case. My
letter to His Excellency statcB that
the firm alluded to voluntarily be
came agents for Ihe cable company
on or about September loth, 18SJI,
and the attempt on Mr. Hall's part
to autcdate the connection of his
firm with tlie New York consti net-on-
of the rejected cable is obvious.
The exact date upon which the ca
ble company's iirst purchase was
made of Hall & Son, l.united, was
July aOth, JSS'J, and the "power of
nttorney" to press the claim (since
invalidated) aiminst the cable com
pany was, according to Mr. Hall's
letter, "some time in August" fol
lowing. On yesterday Hon. V. F.
Allen, Auditor ot Hall & Son, Lim
ited, did me the honor to state that
he had presented the claim for the
S8000 Government subsidy at the
Interior Department, that he was
entirely unconscious of any attempt
to prejudice the cable company's
interests, when ha accepted the po
sition of attorney in fact for the
New York constructors of the tc
jeeled cable. 1 fully believe this,
for Mr. Allen's reputation is that of
a clean man. That the fact ot his
being attorney in fact for the New
Yoik company has been taken ad
antafce of by Hall A Son to attempt
an injury to the cable company 1
also fully believe and expect to de
monstrate at a latei petiod. .lust
hcic permit me to Bay that a
concerted attempt to ruin a man's
business may be disguised and de
nied and hidden in the deepest
pigeon hole of the Hawaiian Com
mittee on Commerce, but all will
not hinder fair-minded citi.ens fiom
looking into and seeing through such
actions and passing judgment for
themselves.
Now, ti word as to Hon. V.'. F.
Allen, Auditor ol IS. O. Hall A. Son,
Limited. In this morning's Adver
tiser the Jollowing statement ap
pears which 1 quote:
"Tlii(the filing ot power of attor
ney to collect the (.lovcrnment sub
Mdy Aug. 21, 1S89) was done by
me in my private capacity, acting
lot the New Yoik company, and be
fore Messrs. iiartholomew A- linker
had contracted any debt with K. O.
Hall t Son, and nearly live mouths
hefoie tho Hawaiian Pacific Cable
Co. was chartered.
I ask this in order that certain
Maicmenls in the open letter of Mr.
li.irllinlomer to the Minister of Fi
nance may be explained and cor
rected. (Signed) W. F. Au.kn."

Hull A Son, Limited.
Oct.lltli. ISSU.
This hill wa paid by mvself in
Kold coin Oct. .11th, 1880. The
lintue "Hawaiian l'acillo Cable Co."
was adopted by the foreign stock
holders to distinguish our cable en
terprise lrom the London, 1.1 rr.it
Britain, Pacific Cable Co. Mr. Al
len is clearly wrong as his own fig
ures show and his action in filing his
power of attorney, which was in de
fiance of my written instructions to
the New York constructors of the
rejected cable, estopped me from
availing myself ot the advantages
of using any part or poi Hon of the
benefits of the Government contract
as fuither collateral with which to
buy the necessary cables to com
plete the series. Now, Mr. Editor,
there are plenty of people who dis
like to argue in newspapers. It
strikes me that when six or eight
men start in to ruin one, it is high
lime that the six or eight were well
ventilated and there is nothing like
a good newspaper in which to per
form the work.
Yours very respectfully,
J. SlIKllMAN B.UirilOl OMKW.
