WHICH?
A leaded at tide in this.niotning'rt
Adiei'tlser, with the abbreviated
torin of ''coiniiiunicatcd" at the
toot, has the following in repaid to
tho abolition of sugar duties and
the treaty w ilh tho J'uitrd States,
that was proposed by our Govern
ment recently. "Those ulioUnow the
friendly disposition oi the United
States towards us iill ail; with sur
prise why wu have not provided for
this contingency. The prcxcnl Min
istry attempted to do ho and found
tho United Stales cordially willing
lo enter Into negotiations by which
we conlil have reiscd our treaty
into a practical commercial union.
Of course, advantages were nskoil
and wc could have granted the con
cessions desired ui'.h dignity nnd
honor, and an autonomy and inde
pendence would have been assured.
At this juncture our election inter
venes and for the sake of a little poli
tical capital, a hue and cry was raised
about our independence, it resulted
in preventing the negotiation and a
final agreement between America
and Hawaii. Now, the occasion has
gono by and perhaps our great
neighbor may not be willing to re
sume negotiations. The nation will
not forget that to the National lie
form party we owe this ruinous blow
at our commercial life and so at the
general prosperity of the country."
Wc have had so much of this kind
of balderdash that it now requires
more than ordinary patience to
listen to or read it. The writer is
either a fool or a knave. Perhaps
both. What were tho "concessions
desired" that wc could have grnutcd
'with dignity and honor, and an
autonomy and independence have
beeu assured?" Tho "concessions"
named in the draft of the proposed
treaty as published, were such as to
directly destroy our "indepen
dence," and wc challenge "commu
nicated" to deny it. If that per
sonage has not sense enough to re
cognise that fact, he is palpably a
fool : and if, seeing it, he t ill de
nies, he is a knave.
FIKE ON THE BORROWDALE.
At about eight o'clock last even
ing a fire occuredon the British .ship
Horrowdale, lying at Urcwer's wharf.
The tire was among some ciates of
crockery in tho lower hold, on the
poit side forward. How it origin
ated is not positively known, but is
surmised to have been from sponta
neous combustion. The hatches
were all closud at live o'clock in the
evening, and no one had been in
that part of the ship after that hour.
The lire bells nshore sounded an
alarm, aud tho various lire compa
nies were Boon at the wharf. A
company of men, under command of
otllcers,from H. 11. M. S. Acorn, was
also quickly on board to render as
sistance. The fire engines on the
wharf had water on in a few sec
onds, some, of them taking it from
the harbor. Of course, the usual
crowd of spectators was there, and
in the way, as usual. Not content
with looking on from the shore,
many rushed on to the .ship.
Tho engines poured water into tho
ship with great energy and in great
quantities, but it was badly direct
ed went to the wrong place and
very little of it reached the right
spot. However, the tiro was extin
guished.
The people on hoard repoit no
damage lo tho ship and compara
tively liltlu to the cargo by the. tire,
but much gi eater damage lo the lat
ter by the salt water.
