TUESDAY, JULY 1, 1890.
According to the Advertiser, "air.
Young represents Hawaii progres
sive, and Mr. Horger is llic ropie
sentatlve of Hawaii retrogiessivo."
Thct e lb another and more correct
t ay of putting the matter. It Is
this: Whatever accords with the
Advertiser policy, though it he thu
imprisonment of Galileo for holding
llut the wot Id is a splieio, is "pro
gressive;" but anything and every
thing not approved 'Of by the Ad
vertiser is "retrogressive!" Foi
tunately, tho country is not com
pelled by the Consitutlou nor by an
Act of the Legislature to accept the
Advciti3er's dictum as to what is
progressive and what rcttogcossivo.
In truth, Mr. Ucrger is a progres
sive man allied to a piogtcssivo
part-.
Tho fact that Representative Ka
lua lias given notice of an Act to
authorize His Majesty to call a Con
stitutional Convention, is interpre
ted by tlie Advci User to mean that
"the National party has at last
shown its band." A few days ago
that paper held that the National
Reform patty was nothing nioie
than a. iahhle which intended to
smash up everything and hud
everybody. Yesterday it "frankly
and cordially admitted that many
ot the members elected by that
party arc both honcstaiid patriotic."
To-daj it finds that the party's hand
N shown when one of the members
gives notice of a bill authorizing
the calling of a Constitutional Con
vention. Ileie we have a graduated
scale that 1 ads from bad to bettor.
There arc no such ftightful calami
tics in that "hand" as have been
predicted would follow the acquire
ment of control by the National Uo
forui paiiy.
A MECHANIC'S TESTIMONY.
Ehitoh BrixcTix:
In justice to an honest and up
right man and for the purpose, if
possible, of sotting aside a fake im
pression existing among a certain
few mechanics in town, I would like
to state a few facts and solid truths
about Mr. Alexander Young, Man
ager Honolulu lion Woiks.
Over twenty .3 ears ago, when
Mr. Young took charge of the
Works, what were they? Simply a
one-horse concern, and a very poor
horse at that. Take the year 1870 :
the pay roll of the Wotks was SloOO
per mouth. To-day and for some
yeais the average pay roll has been
about 11,000 per month quite a
uhaugc, 1 should think. The pay of
natives then working in the Woiks
was 01 per day. Now natives arc
paid from S.S per week up to S27.
Hut in busy times they ofleu make
fiom 00 to -10 per cent, inoic.
Tw enty years ago theic wero S na
tives working in the Works. To
day theie are over 100. These na
tives ate not all merely Iaboiers.
but are employed as mechanics and
clerks in each and eveiy depail
menr. The llonliilu lion Woiks have not
swelled to their present magnitude
without strenuous oxeitions, as for
eign countiies have all along battled
for this trade, and it has been a
hard light for many years to keep
the work here. How has the noik
been kept hcie?
Firstly, llettcr work.
.Secondly. Mr. Young' own im
proved patent machinery, which is
recognized all over tlie sugjr glow
ing countries as the best.
Thirdly. Tho eonectncss and
promptness of all woik taken.
Fourthly. In ea'j of a break
down no waiting, but onl a delay
of a few days, till everything is
again in motion.
Just think of the fact of about
&170,0()0 paid out in one- car for
labor alone in one iustitiiiisii going
broadcast among tho people. Is
there anything 111 town to com
pare to it? I have lieaid lately a
great deal of growling among me
chanics about Mr. Young. I
ask the growlers to mention one
man in this countiy who has been a
better friend to the mechanic than
Mr. Young. You can't 13 nil one.
As an employee of thollonolulu Iron
Works, I write tins in fairness to a
man whom every mechanic ought to
icspect. If any man in town wishes
any further facts, I would be most
happy to furnish him with them. I
beg also to state that Air. Young
knows nothing about my action in
Ibis matter. II. (J. Hun,
Pattern Maker.
