'i'lm following spicy piece of news
is from the Sydney, N. S. W., Her
ald of .Tunc K5, 18110:
An outbreak look place at Hie
(liils Industrial School, Paramatta,
alinul l!:.'!0 last evening. As the
yiils wore lieinu; mnvclird to their
singing lesson, the signal was given,
ami a number of the girls lnokc
Irom the line, ran to the hack of the
Imtldiiig, and eomnipnocd throning
Blonea at the windows, smashing the
windows of the chapel and ilining
loom, ftiul al the tamo time using
i'liglilful language. jlist M'Alphin.
in whose charge the gillw were,
marclied the lemaindef to tho dor
mitories, and then asked the rebel
lious one3 to come in. They replied
that they would not; they had been
suspected of being about to create a
tiot, and now they would go on Willi
it. IMr. Spier, the superintendent,
went to the gills and got the same
reply. 'J wo gnls signified their in
tention of giving in if one or two of
the olhoifl, presumably the leadeis,
would. Things soon got so bad
that tho police were sent for. In
spector Latimer auived with a num
ber ot policemen. Tho gnls sub
mitted, but kept up a frenzied
shouting, uing the vilest language.
The prison van was sent for, and
was backed up to the door. The
giils lushed into it frantically, and
were lodged in the lockup.
Mr. Spier states that thegiils
have been exceptionally good of
lute. The cane had only been used
in three instances since he had been
there about six weeks. His opin
ion was that the girls expected oth
ers back yesterday who had been
sent to prison. It appears that they
had hcatd that these girls had been
l cleaned, and they detet mined to
get into prison with the hope that
they would also be released when
their sentence expired. During the
riot they told some of the ollicrrs
that this was tho reason. They also
said that they had no fault to Unci
with Mr. Spier or Mrs. Spier, who,
they said, had treated them well.
No attempt was made to assault
anybody; they contented them
selves with screaming, curbing, and
breaking windows. Mr. Spier told
them it would be worse for them.
They leplied, "We don't mind that;
we will be free afterwaids." Mr.
Spier had a cell strong enough, but
the gas and water pipes inn through
it, and he was afraid the giils would
tear I hem down. There were 10
giils in the nnl, their ages ranging
fiom 1 1 to 1R years. Mr. Hugh
Taylor, Af. J,. A., was piesent and
tiied to pacify them, bni the' sim
ply gave three cheers for him and
resumed their babel. Two of the
inmates who were not implicated
went into (its. The opinion is that
Iho whole secret of the riot may bo
traced to the fact that other giils
were released alter being sent to
prison for similar conduct. As the
girls were being driven away nearly
all said, "Good-bye, Mr. and Mrs.
Spier; you have treated us well ; it
is not your fault."
DEATH BY 0VER-EXERTI0H.
A I.nil Dies in n Kacc
The Auckland, X. Z., Herald ot
July 11th, contains an account of a
boy named Thomas Wilson dying
from over-exertion. A number of
boys were amusing themselves by
playing the game of "Ilarc and
1 lounds." They had been running
(and walking at short intervals) for
an hour nnd a half. They were al
most coming to a finish, Wilson
was a "hare," and nearly side by
side with him was another boy named
Sands. Wilson stopped and ex
claimed, "I'm done." Shortly after
he fell. A gentleman saw, from his
residence near by, the boy fall, and
went to his assistance. Finding tho
lad weak and unconscious, the gen
tleman procured some spirit nnd
poured it into Wilson's month, with
out effect,. The pulse was feeble,
and in a few minutes became im
perceptible. A doctor was booh in
attendance, lint failed to restore
animation. Tho medical man ex
pressed the opinion that the boy had
died from ovcr-exeition. Tho Ind's
father said that his son left home in
apparently good health nnd spirits,
and made no complaint, of any kind,
nor had ho ever done so. This in
cident might scivc as a caution
against over-cxcition at athletio ex
ercises. SUPREME COURT.
