A verj' gay wedding party was
that celebrating the marriage of Dr.
Eilson Lewis Hutchinson and Miss
Alice Lillian Afong, given by the
parents of the bride, Mr. C. Afong
(Chinese Commercial Agent) and
Mrs. Afong, at their Waikiki resi
dence last night. The couple were
married by the Rev. Alex. Mackin
tosh at half-past seven in piesence
of a family party. Half an hour
later the happy pair held a recep
tion, when a large throng tendered
Messrs. F. B. McStocker and
Arthur Johnstone ushered the guests
inside, where they were hearty
welcomed by the host and hostess,
aud presented to Dr. and Mrs. Hut
chinson. The twain made one look
ed happy and handsome, standing
under a floral raarringe bell, the
bride costumed in cream grosgrain
trimmed with real lace, in her hair
diamond ornaments bestowed by her
father, having a veil decked with
oraDge blossoms and lilies, and hold
ing a bouquet of red carnations.
Miss Marie Afong was maid of
honor, in pink satin brocade costume
and bearing a bouquet like the
bride's. Mr. Oliver C. Swain well
maintained the combined dignity
and suavity required in the best
The house from within and with
out presented views of fairyland
beauty. Hundreds of colored lan
terns glimmered amidst the palm
grove surrounding the building.
The verandas and pavilions were
likewise gaily illuminated. A canvas-roofed
lanai, with floor of
strewn grass and walls of all na
tions' flags, set in an angle of the
rambling domicile, constituted the
main refreshment salon, and, bril
liantly lighted with chandeliers and
chromatic lanterns of fantastic de
signs, made an inviting retreat.
The viands the were choicest substan
tiate and delicacies, including beve
rages for all tastes, served on ele
gant little tables round which the
company cosily disposed itself, at
the call to supper, in many pleasant
groups. In the parlor many hand
some presents were displayed, com
prising articles of utility and orna
ment, and including costly plate
The Royal Hawaiian Band, con
ducted by Prof. Berger, played in
the park at the rear of the house,
till after ten o'clpck, after which
the string contingent plnycd for
dancing till after midnight. Com
fortable chairs and settees were net
out amongst the trees, affording the
highest charms of an open-air con

The Board of Representatives of
the Honolulu Fire Department held
its monthly meeting lust night, in
the room of Engine Co., 2?o. 2, the
Chief Engineer, U. B. Wilson, pre
siding. Sixteen members answeied
lo the i oil call. Communications
weic received from No. 1 Company,
Hook and Ladder, and the Fue Po
lice. The letter specified the iuem
bei of its compuny sent to i epic
sent it on the Board of Rcpicseuta
tives. The coirespondence as all
accepted aud placed on file. Fiueb
were remitted in several cases of
absence at previous meetings, the
absentees furnishing .ntistaclory
reasons for non-attendance. The
rcpoit of the ball auditing commit
tee was read, acocpted, and placed
on Hie, and the committee dis
chaiged. A corrected draft of the
constitution and by-laws of the Kiie
Police Company was read, the cor
rections being mainly to make the
phraseology used conform to law.
Ordered punted. Money from the
sick fund for the relief of mem hers
of company No. 1 injured at recent
fires was placed al the disposal of
the Foreman of that company. A
little desultory talk followed, and
the meeting adjourned.
