EXPRESSION OF THANKS.
The ladies concerned take this
weans to express their 'very hearty
thanks to all who so kindly aided
them in the fair for the Sailors'
Home. Through the courtesy of
Admiral Brown they had a most efll
clent corps of workers to decorate
the building ; and to the Charleston
band and all aboard ship they ex
tend their thanks. Also to Mr. Ber
ger and hiB ever ready musicians ;
to the kind artisans in various walks
in life, who gave them substantial
aid ; to the Press of Honolulu, and
to each and every one who lent a
hand. It is impossible to name all
of the host, but the ladies managing
the fair wish every one to feel him
self personally thanked, and that
with heartiness. Finally, thanks
.are returned to the ever generous
Honolulu publio who in defiance of
the weather turned out to make the
occasion a success.

Noble Mullcr presented the re
port of the commerce committee ou
the hill to regulate the receipt and
storage of alcoholic liquors at the
Custom House. They lecomiueud
that the bill be laid ou the table and
that the Minister of Finance be in
structed to have new regulations
issued.
Noble Mucfurlaue did not think it
necessary to present a minority re
port. The matter arose on a short
age of liquors, but that was under
the previous administration.
The report was adopted.
Noble Muller presented the re
port of the commerce committee on
the bill to encourage the cultivation
of coffee, recommending that it be
luid on the table, as there is no pro
vision for carrying it out. Adopted.
Minister Peterson presented the
report of the select committee on
unassigned lands. They refer to
the omission of certain lands by
oversight from the great division of
1848, and to the test case decided
in favor of the Government against
the Bishop Estate. The trustees of
that Estate offer to give up 12 of
these unassigned hinds, but ask that
three of them may be retained for
thebencfit of Kauiehamcha Schndls
and for a proposed division among
natives. The bill to that end the
committee consider a fair and proper
one, therefore recommend that it
pass.
The committee had under consid
eration another bill proposing to
give up the Government's claim on
certain lands always held by the
Crown Land Commissioners. Tliej
recommend certain amendments
leaving out some of the lands speci
fied, with which they recommend
that the bill pass.
' Signed by A. P. Peterson, R. R.
Hind, Win. 11. Comwcll and J. E.
Bush.
Rep. Paehaole moved that the re
port be adopted. ,
Noble Baldwin moved that it be
laid on the table to lie considered
with the bill. He for one wanted
further information.
Rep. Brown was in favor of the
first bill, but not of the second.
Noble Widemann (holding up a
copy of Ihe Advertiser) said that
paper seemed to Know wen wnen
this report was coming in. "The
hand is the hand of Esau, but the
voice is the voice of Jacob." Who
ever heard of such a thing as taking
away a portion of the support ot the
head of the nation? The idea sim
ply originated with that man with
Esau's skin and Jacob'3 voice.
Noble Cornwell said the commit
teo had gone thoroughly into the
question, and knew more about it
in a day than the member for the
first district did in a week. If Ka
mehameha III. had divided these
lands, he would have made the same
division as the committee proposed
to-day.
Noble J. M. Horner held that the
nation could provide better for the
King by retaining the lauds and im
proving them than by surrendering
them to the Commissioners who
would let them be waste.
Noble Wideniann said the lands
were never held by the Government.
Minister Peterson said the Com
missioners, in response to a demand
from the late administration, de
livered the lands up to the Govern
ment subject to the action of this
Legislature. t
The renort was adopted, the bills
to be read a third time to-morrow.
