THE END OF THE WORLD.
A Vlvlil Sclotlfln I'lj'lurn or the
Flnnl Cntitr4iilip.
The ncublic in Orion, Saturn and
tho Moon arc indeed suggestive of
change types, they may be called,
of tho flrt stage, the middle, anil
the last that matter passes through
in the long process of the evolution
of woilds.
And, of all changes, (hat change
has most interest for us which
affects our own planet, the lvirlli ;
it lias reached a later ttage than
Saturn, though uot so late a tage
as the Moon ; hut only iuloug ages
and by minute efYccts'will further
changes be noticed.
Ages hence it may be discovered
that there is some slight change in
the Earth's orbit; or Meeury, yet
nearer to the sun than we, may he
seen to pursue a smsdlcr orbit than
now, and the temule fact may come
home to man that we are drawing
nearer to the Sun. Time goes on,
and the tropics become too hot for
existence, and colder regions 11ml a
welcome change to warmth.
Ago by ago goes by, and the end
is, visibly, no nearer; but the fig
ures of astronomers only too surely
tell their tale.
Now the tropics are an impas&able
desert, and all the life on the globe
cougicgates around the poles; Spain
has lost her vineynids and the Alps
their snows; England is a burning
desert and Greenland teems with
the vegetation of the tropics ; in
smaller and smaller circles the in
habitants gather round the poles.
"But," to quote the words of
Kcightluy Miller, "the narrowed
limits of the habitable Earth can no
longer support this vast increase of
population, and famine begins to
mow down its victims by millions.
"Now, indeed, the end of all life
on the Earth draws on apace
The heat and drought become more
and more insupportable; rain and
dew fall no longer. All springs of
water fail, and the "rivers dwindle to
streamlets, and trickle slowly over
their stony beds, and now scarcity
Qf water is added to scarcity
of food. Those who escape from
the famine perish by the drought,
and those who escape from the
drought are reserved for a fate more
awful yet. For a time the few re
maining inhabitants are partially
screened from the overwhelming pow
er of the Sun by a dense canopy of
clouds formed by the evaporation of
every lake or sea.
"But soon the Sun scorches up
these vapor banks, and dissipates
them into space as fast as they can
form. Then the fiery orb shines out
.in unutterable splendor without the
lightest cloud wreath to interpose
between himself and his victims.
Then the last donizens of the uoild
are stricken down and consumed;
the last traces of oiganiclife are
blotted from its surface." ILoiig
man's Magazine.
