Accoidlng to Prof. T. Russcll'a
explanation of the subject, lit the
American Association, tliu term cold
wave is employed when n fnll of
toinpornluro occurs In twenty-four
hours of 20 or more over nn nrcn
nf at least fi0,000 squiiru miles, mul
the temperature In nny part of tho
nrcn descends to 30 . According
to this definition, tlicio were in the
Uhlted States, between 1880 nud
1890, C'Jl cold waves. In the great
cold wave of Janunry 17, 1882, the
twenty-degree fall lino Included nn
mcr. of 1,101,000 square miles, and
the ten-degree fnll lino nn area of
2,020,000 square miles. There have
been in ten years six cold wnvi-s in
which the area of the twenty-degree
fall was moie than a million square
miles. The cold waves seem always
to occur over the country covered
on the preceding day by nn area of
low bniomctrio pressure, or the
southeast of the country covered by
an area of high pressure. Where
both occur, the cold waves attain
their greatest extent. Only a few
cases are recorded in which low
pressure areas have not been follow
ed by a fall of temperature nt their
centres. In twelve instances within
ten years there were rises in temper
atuic instead of falls. On the other
hand, cold waves do not occur with
out the picscncc of an area of high
or low pressure. The extent of the
cold wave is dependent on the extent
of the area of low pressure and the
area of high pressure on the day
preceding it. The shapes and rela
tive positions of areas of high and
low pressure are various, and are
described and classified in the
author's paper. Popular Scionee

A Swede has invented a sleam raft

The experiment ot tanning leather
with palmetto roots has been suc
cessfully tried at Apalachiola, Fla.
The leather was as soft and pliable
as the finest calfskin.
The copper mines of the whole
woild are being taxed to their
utmost to supply the demand for
copper wire and the other apparatus
used in the application of electric
ity. The newest snow-plow, which is
said to be the invention of a Mary
lander, not only throws the snow to
each side of the track and makes a
way for the locomotive, but it takes
up snow in big scoops and keeps the
boiler supplied with water.
The following method of making
paper transparent for copying draw
ings has been found very service
able: Place a blank sheet of paper
over the drawing and rub it lightly
with pure benzine. The tracing can
then be easily made, and the ben
zine, upon evaporating, leaves the
paper as opaque as before.
The Berlin fire department has
lately received a novel fire engine,
which has excited much interest in
that city. The carriage is construct
ed entirely of papier mache, all the
different pa'rts, the body, wheels,
poles and the rest being finished in
the best possible manner. While
the durability and powers of resist
ance possessed by this material are
fully as great as those of wood, the
weight is of course much less.
Archbishop Ryan of Philadelphia
is fond of bon mots, and is a good
bon mottcr himself. At a dinner at
Mr. Secretary Blaine's house, at
Mount Descret, last year, William
Waller Phelps .said, in'the course of
a discussion of the Irish question,
"But you must admit, Bishop Rj'an,
that many practises of the Irish in
Ireland to-day nie treason." "Ah,
but treason is reason in Ireland on
account of the absent T," retorted
