The United States Fish Commis
sion steamer Albatross is being fit
ted out at the navy yards at Mare
Island for an important winter
cruise. Lieutenant-Commodoie C.
L. Tanner will be in charge and will
engage in a deep sea expedition of
tho greatest interest. By order of
Marshal McDonald, United States
Fish Commissioner, the Albatioss
has been ordered to complete some
impoitant work left unfinished when
the vessel was en route from New
York city to San Francisco.
Tho Albatross will sail direct for
Mexico soon after January 1st and
,will commence her' work at Acapul
co. A line of dredgings will be run
and soundings taken from Acapulco
to Galapagos. At the last named
point the islands will bo dredged
and the work will then be continued
to Panama. Then a number of
normals will be run fiom the 100
fathom line into deep water. The
scientific work of the expedition will
be in charge of Alexander Agassiz,
a son of the celebrated Professor
