LINCOLN IN THE WHITE HOUSE,
l'licrc, ns in his father's cabtnj bt
Now Salem, .or Yamlnlinr or Srrring
field, tho man Lincoln never gave n
fraction of thought or n moment of
care to any question of dress. Ho
followed the ordinary fashion and
woro what the tailor, hatter, and
bootmaker made for him. And so
clad, tho humblest citizen stood in
his presence without awe, and the
highest dignitaries with perfect re
spect. The world has yet to learn
that General Scott, or Lord Lyons,
or Bishop Simpson, or Piinco Napo
leon, or Archbishop Hughes, or the
Comto de Paris, or Chief-Justice
Taney ever felt humiliated by tho
dress or want of dignity of President
Lincoln in state ceremonial or pri
vate audience. The eyes of these
men were not upon the tailor's suit
of broadcloth, but upon the Presi
dent and the man, and in such a
scrutiny Lincoln outranked any mor
tal who ever questioned him cyo to
eye In his long and strange career
from New Salem to the Blue Room
of the White House.
As with his dress, so with his man
ner. Tempered and modified by the
gravity of added years, and an ever
wideninc experience amone varied
social classes and conditions in many
parts of the Union, it noveilheless
retained to the last a strong impress
of the essential cliaracleiistics of the
frontier simplicity, directness and
sincere heartiness. He never learned
and never used meaningless or mis
leading conventional phrases. He
would say, MI am glad to see you."
lie would neter say, "I am ohauned
to see you." He always greeted his
visitors with a cordial shake of the
hand and a winning look or smile,
unless, as very rarely happened, his
mind was weighed down with a pie
occupation of overwhelming care and
suspense. He always listened with
patience, evui when the request of
liis petitioner might bo frivolous or
foolish, That ho was fond of wit,
and jest, and laujihter, the world al
leady knows. He gave others court-
kindness and consideration to
the last degiee, and never by word
or look assumed that he demanded
them for himself. J. G. Nicolay, in
the October Century.
