come naturalized in Florida by Heat
ing nuts from the West Indies, and

tion in the vicinity of Key West and
on the Keys. There is one single
grove at Blscayne Bay of 300,000
trees. Tho trees begin to bear at 0
or 7 yean of age. The nuts arc a
trillc smaller than those of the tropics,
and are not considered so valuable
for seed purposes which are procur
ed principally from tho Bay Islands
and the mainland of Honduras. Tho
icsulls have been highly piofltable
to those who engage in the business,
for there is a large demand from
facloiies that prepare it In a desic
cated form, and from confectioners.
The confectioners of New Yoik alone
use up about 0,000,000 cocoanul'i
annually. Within a few year3 all
the land in the Stale and on the

ed and the number of trees will not

The islands of Samoa have many
natural and cultivated groves of co
coanuts which produce most prolifi
cally. The most of the crop is con
sumed locally as food. The export
of copra is about 3000 tons annu
ally. Robert Louis Stevenson, the
noclist who is settled there, is about
to set out a grove of 80,000 eoeoanut
tiees. These have been started in
small baskets and were ready to set
out three weeks after spi outing and
will begin bearing in four years. It
is estimated in Samoa that a grove of
10,000 trees in full bearing is worth
S2000 a 3 ear for the copra alone.
British Honduras sends annually
to the United States about 2,000,000
nuts which will soon be largely in
creased, as within the last few yeais

York in two steamers that call for
them legularly, making it their sole
tiallle. The local price is from 18
Barncoa in Cuba produces about
25,000,000 annually valued at 820
per thousand. About one half arc ex
ported to the United States and the
other half turned into oil by two
large factoiies. Three fourths of the
population of this district are de
pendent upon the eoeoanut industry.

cipally. The imports of cocojnuts into
London aie over 12,000,000 annu
ally. Marseilles, Barcelona, Liverpool,
Hamburg and Bremen take many
millions of nuts; and vast quantities
of copia and oil.
