THE JAPANESE EARTHQUAKE.
San Francisco, Cab, Dec. 9. Prof.
Ilomcc Rrigps, the well known cdu
calor of Buffalo, is in the city on Ids
way home from Japan, lie was in
Yokohama at the time of the great
earthquake and immediately piocced
ed to Nogoya and Glfu, where the
shocks were most scvcic. After
describing the scenes, which have
already been published, Professor
Brings said : "In the ruin of the Post
Ollico at Nogoya, which was the only
lniek bnilding'tn town, twenty postal
clerks were buried. The unhappy
men wcic assoiting the morning mail
when the building toppled over upon
them and buried them. Not one
escaped." Piofessor llriggs went
to'Gifu, but the railroad beds had
been so badly wrecked that tiavel
beyond was impossible. Immense
crevices fiom which hot mud and
steam escaped were to be seen in all
directions. During his stay theic
an unhappy Japanese, who had lost
his wife in one of the crevices, went
in search of her, and while standing
on the edge of the fissure the earth
ciumblcd beneath him and piecipi
tated him into the unknown depths
beneath. All of these crevices along
the roads hac since been bridged,
but the danger fiom them is little
lessened. Prof. Briggs said: "I
think this earthquake will be known
as one of the most violent that lias
occuricd during the Christian era."

residents of Hamburg have become
almost panic-stricken at the wide
prevalence of the disease. The sta

past week the deaths have been 280
