MAUI NOTES.
Tho sugar secson has comtncnccd
once more, tho Quills are all busy
running out the "sweet thing," anil
tho white winged carrlois of the
ocean again ninko their appearance
in our quiet little harbor.
The A nu'rican brignntino Consuclo,
dipt Jncobsen, of Spieckels' line of
clippers, arrived the 'Jo'lh iust., 10
days from Sau.Francisco, with a full
cargo of general merchandise "Mid 2
horses for Mr. Fietl. Horner of. La.
liaina. The A'liicrican brigantiim
Jno. D. Sprcckels, Uapt. Cliristiin
sen, sailed on tho 'ttd inst. for San
Francisco with 01)20 bags sugar ami
00 hides; the American schooner
Anna and 'l'liiusfeg nctoonor Golden
Shoie, Uupt. Henderson, on UOth
inst., each with a full load of
sugar, and the 3-uiasted schooner
Glendale, Johnson, anived on the
2!)th inst. from Honolulu, to load
sugar from Wilder A: Co. for San
Francisco.
The schooner Anna, Capt. Wil
liams, of O. S. S. Co.'s line, left
about 9 o'clock last Saturday, but
when only 2 hours out canied away
her jib, loreslaysail and foresail,
which left her only her mainsail
and Hying jib, and as she was in
danger of drifting down on the Wai
beo or Kahnkuloa Point, the captain
decided to hoist the signal of distress
for the steamer Claudino, which for
tunately was in port and at once went
to her assistance, the sum agreed
upon being SGOOO for towing her into
port. This is the first case that ever
happened at Knliului of a vessel hav
ing to put back to port, and it i9
regrettable the thing should have oc
curred ; but fate probably willed it
so. By the way, the Maui corres
pondent of the Gazette is a little bit
out of his bearings whan he asserts
that the Anna "maintains her ancient
reputation for slow trips;" for al
though she has lately had several very
long Mips down, she had, until a
couple years ago, as good an average
record as any of the vessels plying in
the same trade, gencially making the
down trip in twelve to thirteen days,
and tho round trip in thirty-two to
thiity-six days. That correspondent
would do best to hide his guilty head
somewhere In the wilderuessof Hale
akala, for Capfair$WiJliauu?i8 on the
warpath with lots of red corpuscles
in his eye, and the correspondent's
carefully combed scalp is 'decidedly
in danger.
The weather has been decidedly blus
tering, rainy and unpleasant lately.
Tlie roads are either muddy or flood
ed, and our grand old mountain has
worn the cape of snow for an unprcc
edentedly long time, one lonely white
shred of the garment still being dis
cernible on the summit. This moist
weather and the Chinese New Year
have somewhat retauled the work in
the mills, but when these causes and
election day nie things of the past,
the work will be pushed with re
doubled vigor, and most of the plan
tations expect to take off good crops.
A Chinaman at Kahului, in trying
to set off a bomb which would not
explode, severely injured his hand
by the unexpected discharge of the
bomb, and it is said his hand will
have to be amputated Is it not
about time that some rcstiiction was
placed upon the indiscriminate burn
ing uf firecrackers and bembs which
the Celestial indulges in at this time,
by day and by night, being a con
stant source of sleeplessness, exces
sive annoyance and danger to all other
