London News says Khedive Abbas
requires the Sultan to send him a
firman formally recognizing and con
firming his authority, and has sent a
message to that effect to Constanti
nople. The Sultan replied that the
Khedive must come in person to re
ceive the firman. Abbas objects to
this as he thinks the Sultan might
take the occasion to extort some con
cession. It is claimed that France
aud Russia arc intriguing against
Great Britain at the Sultan's court
and have inspired the course of that
potentate in regard to the Khedive,
and the issue has become a trial of
strength between the Powers con
cerned. Later news from Paris says the
Secretary of the British Embassy in
Constantinople had an audience with
the Sultan on lebruary 13th and it
is scmi-olliciully announced that the
lirman of investiture of the present
Khedive of Egypt has been prepared
and it is worded in the exact terms
of the finnan investing the late Khe
dive, Tewfik Pasha. It is regarded
us a signal success for English diplo
macy as it defeats the attempt to in
duce the Sultan to insert in the lirman
instructions to the Khedive reflecting
upon English supremacy in Egypt.
The Sultan adhered to Uie old form
in order not to embarrass the Khe
dive. The ceremony of investiture
will take place in Cairo, in accord
ance with the desire of England and
with the concurrence of the Khedive.
