A RACE WITH A CYCLONE.
Sir. .lliehnel IUltt'n fitory of a Itnll
Mr. Michael Dnvitt tells a thrilling
story of a narrow escape a train in
which liu was passenger in America
had in a race with a cyclone. The
btorm-cloud was seen gathering nt
the extreme hound of the prairie.
Ou its descent to tho earth, it bore
along with irresistible fury, tearing
up trees, demolishing houses, barns
and other obstacles, which were sent
spinning iu the air like so many
straws. The lirst feeling of surprise
ami curiosity soon turned to ft ar, as
it was seeu that the hurricane wus
bearing directly for the train, nnd
must inevitably stnko it broadside
unless they could outrun its extent.
The women shrieked .and hid their
eyes from the impending disaster,
and even strong men's hearts quaked.
The engine-driver at a glance saw it
was a nice for life, and instantly put
on nil steam. The track was favor
able, and almost instantly the engine
was tearing away at a rate of a hun
dred miles an hour. Would she be
able to get clear of tho storm fiend's
wing? was tho anxious thought in the
passengers' minds. It was a ques
tion of only a few .minutes or mo
ments of awful suspense. The hur
ricane seemed to boswooping upon
aud overwhelming them. A sigh of
relief and joyous "exclamations pro
claimed that the fcyelone had missed
them. It was a narrow eseapej
though, for it struck the metals about
fifty feet in the rear of tile last car,
and scattered the rails in all direc
tions over which tho train had liter
ally tlownonlya second or two pre
viously. Such an experience is not
likely soon to be forgotten, and Mr.
Davilt can scarcely relate it without
a tremor. Portadown. (Ireland)

New York, February; 1.1. Henry
Tenbroeck Gatnage, an eccentric old
man of artistic and Ulcraryiustcs,
was found dead from cerebral apop

room in the University bt New York
building, on Washington square. Be
sides tho regular usWof the univer

for the last forty-nine years. ' His
habits were those of a recluse.
For many years after coming from
their Southern home, Mr. Gatnage
and his father, OmeraGamage, lived
together in the rooms at the univer
sity. The younger Gamage was a
classmate of Senator Evarts, and was
graduated from Harvard in 18G7.
While traveling iu Europe at the
close of the French l evolution, the
elder Gainugp'purchased several
valuable paintings, which covered
the walls of their apartments at the
university. There are about 100 of
them, mainly the works of old mas
teis, such as Raphael, Gtiido, Rem
brandt, Titian, Albert Durer, and
ninny examples of the Italian and
German schools. Mrs. Diminick, to
whom most of the estate will go,
