A VOICE FROM NEW YORK.
In your weekly isstic of March 1st I
"Thegreat Republic isnot prepared
to acquire litis group as yet. She is
passing through a great transition
stage in the matter of national de
fense, having begun in earnest to
build up her navy and fortify her
coasls. Until this process bo com
pleted, the United Stales will not
want lo acquire any outlying position
such as this group, the defense of
which would Involve, perhaps, as
much expense us would that of all
her ocean pints on the mainland.
Another point is that the United
Slates will not take over these isl
ands before their own people unmis
takably signify llieir dosho to have
It is not the policy of the United
Stales to attempt by either force or
inlluence to acquire tenllory outside
of its present domain. Our people
on lite east side of this gicat Hopub
lic do not hear as much about the
Sandwich Islands as those living upon
the Pacific side. We probably know
as much about your people as the
Califoinians know about the Cana
dians. Brielly I will attempt to give
you our idea of the annexation ques
tion. First. The United States is a
powerful and wealthy nation. The
Kingdom of Hawaii is just mo re-
verse. It is not the province of the
powerful nation to invite the weak
nation lo join it. That question
should be settled by the smaller na
tion at such time, and in such man
ner as it chooses.
Second. The Hawaiian Kingdom
is coveted by nations who would lake
the Islands if it were not for the
fact that they fear the United States,
and they know that this country will
compel the whole woild to keep its
hands nlf the little kingdom. We
- :. ; .. ," ,, :

appreciate that fact, and that when
it does decide to make a change in

Thiid. Our information is that
y(ll kingdom is decreasing iu popu-
lalion anil wealth. If it should he
annexed it would, as we believe, in
less than Ion years have a population
of at least fi00,000 industrious "well

Fourth. We do not waul Hawaii .
until it is ready lo become a part of
I our household, and it must Knock

You are mistaken about our not be-
' ing ready to acquire the group. We
