Many vessels craped, but seven

no personal injury is reported. The

the royal dry docks in Leghorn in
188-1. She is 102 feet long, 72 feet
beam, has a drnughl of 2!l feet, and
a displacement of 13,500 tons. The
maximum thickness of life armored
steel plates on her breastwork to six
feet below the water lino is 18 inches,
and on the tower l'J inches. This
great hulk has shown the extraordi
nary speed of 18 2-5 knots. Her
four 150-ton guns arc 17-inch caliber
and II feet long, and take a charge
of 800 pounds of powder. At three
fifths of a mile the 5800-pound pro
jectile will pierce twenty-eight feet
of wiought-iion plates. These great
guns have a range of ten mileB. In
addition to the main battery there
'are eight six-inch guns, forty smaller
guns and four torpedo tubes.
In the Lepanto the builders dis
carded the belt nrmor altogether, re
lying upon a heavy steel turtle-back
and a cellular construction to protect
the ship and vitals and mounting
four 100-ton guns in nineteen-ineh
barbettes placed en echelon inside a

bases of the six smokestacks.
