I have received another letter from a well-informed concspondent in Ber lin, which gives me some additional information respecting the Emperor's recent illness. It seems that his mal ady became very troublesome about a month ago. The attack was so se vere, so prolonged, and its effects upon the Emperor wero so alarming, that his medical attendant, Dr. Leu thold, sent an urgent summons to Dr. von Esmnrch of Kiel, a very clever man, who gave up his practice years ago, and now only attends to his own family. Dr. von Esmaroh married in 1872 Princess Henrietta of Scblcswig-IIolstcin, who is an aunt of the German Emperor, and has since been confidentially consult ed by the Imperial family in really 'serious cases. Dr. von Esmnrch was in instant attendance upon the Emperor for a week befoie his much-hurried flight to Hubcrtsstock, and ho fol lowed his patient to that place and returned to Rerliu with him, and is still staying at the Scbloss. Dr. Es march is regarded at tho German court as a stormy petrel, and every effort was made to conceal the fact that he had been summoned to attend the Emperor. One of the best oharacter-studiea of the German emperor which has yet appeared is thatlahconically en titled "William," in the current num ber of the Contemporary Review. It is very severe, but very just, nnd' lifts the veil completely from the visage of the latter-day prophet of Khorassan. The article bears clear internal evidence of having been written by a German. It is curious that one so well informed and accu rate writes anonymously. The author of this critical study of the shouting, spouting, traveling, praying and Ileaven-knows-all-what Emperor, joins with the rest of the world in misquoting Prince Bismarck's hack neyed reference to the bones of the senile Pomeranian grenadier, the words actually used by the ex-Chancellor having been "the healthy bones of a Pomeranian musketeer " The nameless critic is very hard on the enthusiastic American whom many well recognize to be Poulteuey Higelow, who, after being the h.m pcror's guest at the military maneu vers, wrote home that "he is another Frederick the Great," was the last man the world would expect to con tribute a discordant lionl at.the fallen lion, Bismarck, in transatlantic ma gazines. As a matter of fact, the anonymous countrymnn and judge makes the Kaiser out to be more of a fool than a Frederick, more of an idiot than a hero, aud less of a real monarch than- a mouthing mounte bank. But, in any case, his article in the magazine is as true as it is trenchant. THE DUKE OF EUIKBUIUin'S SON. The illness from which Prince Al fred of Edinburgh has-been suffering causes great anxiety because His Royal Highness has always been delicate, under the most favorable circumstances. The Prince is likely to be more or less invalid for several months to come. His illness excites more interest in Germany, because, in the event of the failure of issue, the Duke of Counaiight would be come the ultimate heir to the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. WIIEUi: FHVNKLIK WAS 110UN. Americans visiting this year will be disappointed at finding that one of their favorite points of pilgrimage has disappeared. Upon one of the houses recently demolished for the enlargement of South Kensington Museum was placed a blue tablet of the Society of Arts, inscribed: "Here was born Benjamin Frank lin." Mr. J. P. Blaizo, nn extensive real cstalc'deuler in Dcs Moines, Iowa, narrowly escaped ono of the severest. attacks of pneumonia while in the northern part of that statu during a recent blizzard, says tho Saturday Iievitw. Mr. Blalze had occasion to drive several miles during tho storm and was so thoroughly chilled that he wus unablo to get warm, and in side of an hour after his return he was threatened with a severe case of pneumonia or lung fever. Mr. Blnize sent to the nearest dtug store and got a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, of which he had often heard, aud look a number of huge doses. He says tho effect was won derful and that in a short tiino he was breathing quite easily. He kept on taking the medicine and the next day was able to come to Des Moines.
