S.S's question: "IwiHiwk 'njnd
Horner one simple uucstion, How
can a person claim to be a Christian,
and at the same time advocate pro
hibition, when God is on recoid in
opposition to prohibition?"
We cannot sec where the above
question comes in while discussing
the effects of the Kansas prohibition
law, or wuero S. S.'s assertion of "a
large class of prohibition hypocrite,
who kaep their jug of rum in the
cupboaiil, and drink it on tho sly,"
conies in, as, if all prohibitionists were
hypocrites, it would only show weak
man's inconsistency, anil not affect
in tho least the righteous principle of
prohibition. Hut if man's character
must be (Irst discussed, we demand
to know who S. H. is We vrant his
name, his piesent uud past occupa
tion, all of his inconsistent acts and
shortcomings, whether he drinks in
9ecret as a hypocrite, or drinks
openly as a rumbloat, having no
shame, that would be consistent with
Ids doctrines, and what he professes
to believe, viz., that God made strong
drink to be drunk and made him to
drink it, so to be loyal lie must drink ;
or we must set him down as not only
inconsistent, but a hypocrite, pleach
ing one thing but acting another.
Perlxips y. S. has never fully un
derstood the aim of prohibitionists
and it may be in order to explain.
The prohibitory system does not tell
a man he shall not diink. its mam
object is to prevent Governments,
States, Counties and Municipal au
thorities setting up public nuisances
and fountains of crime in the way of
saloons and liquor stores. If some
will have liquor they must get it
without the consent of the prohibi
tionists, either by voice or vole ; thus
tre keep our skirts clear and our con
sciences condemn us not. Neither
shall wc have to answer unto the
Great Father that we voiced or voted
for an institution that degrades, beg
gars and impoverishes humanity.
Ve are for neither high nor low li
censes. Suppose we vote for licenses
high or low, it is license all the same.
S. S. may say, "I do not favor intem
perance; 1 am opposed to drunken
ness, still I am a license man." If
he favors license he favors the thing
licensed. If he favors thus, does it
not follow that he favors the product
of the thing licensed, namely, mod
erate drinking, intemperance, drunk
enness and the saloon fruits of like
cvilw? The saloon bears but one kind
of fruitage. License the saloon and
you license the fruitage; they are in
separably coLiicctcd. Prohibitionists
don't want the fruits. Tho saloon's
product and righteousness arc not
yokefellows; and do not work to
gether with one accord.
Tippling and prayer are strangers
to each oilier. Drunkenness and
Christianity cannot walk together.
Divine favoi may not be asked upon
the ballroom's giddy whirl, nor the
clinkiug glasses of the debauchee.
High license, low license, dries no
tears, soothes no aching hearts, cools
no burning brows only in the grave !
-License hushes no cry of hunger, no
plea of nakedness, no plaint of dis
grace only in the grave! License
hears no cry for warmth, no claim for
shelter, uo suit for peace, no plea for
domeatic felicity, nj demand for
sobriety, no appeal for honesty, no
supplication for mercy ; they are all
hushed in the grave. License makes
no drunkard a sober man ; it removes
uo temptation from him. License
helps to create murderers, wife
beaters, child-destroyers. License
aids in filling our alms-houses, our
asylums, our prisons.
High license gilds temptation;
places fascinating enticements upon
iniquity, and adds attractiveness unto
deeds of sensualitj' and crime. It
seeks to make debauchery appear as
it never can be, respectable. It
lessens no crime, detracts nothing
from wickedness, makes no wrong
right, is not effectual in covering the
skeleton of death. It removes no
cloud of darkness. It happilles no
home. It makes no father a man, no
husband a protector. Drunkenness
and the tralllc in rum tell but one
sad, damning tale. It destroys all
honor, all sense of respectability, con
ceals the blush of shame; makes man
brutal, robs the lieiiit and mind of
humane principles ; dishonors God,
Christ, the church ; dethrones reason,
enthrones perverted appetites.
Such are the fruits of moderate
drinking, drunkenness and licensed
rumsclling. They are anti-Christian
and anti-pioliibiliou fruits. The
Groat Father has enacted His pro
hibitory edict against the raising of
such fruits, and pronounced a curse,
and even death in some cases,
against the transgressors of his pro
hibitory law. He doesn't counte
nance or justify so much as one of
those fruits. Yet S. S. says He is
on record against prohibition. Mr.
S. S will please inform us where
such record can be found.
"The wine made at the feast of
Cana?'' Oh! if rumsejlers can Mud
a peg there, to hang a comforter on,
they are welcome to it. That wine
we remember was made altogether of
water. "They Ulled the water pots
with water to tho biim." There was
no alcohol in it, no room for alcohol,
as the pots were llllod with water to
the brim. The most rampant prohi
bitionist has no objection to such
drink a9 that. They were only
against alcoholic drink, and the en
couiagement given by governments
to their manufacture and sale, spread
ing these evil fruits as a curse among
all classes T.iking this picture of
facts aa a whole, S., S. may see "how
a person claiming to be a Christian
can advocate prohibition" conscien
tiously, , J. M. IIOltNKIl.
