St. Petersburg, Mnreh 30. Tho
presence of balloons over tho forts
and encampments in Poland is bc
coniing more frequent tlinn ever and
is causing much indignation among
at my olllcers, who are helpless to
prevent military secrets from becom
Ini! known to the German olllcers,
who are known to be taking obsetvu
tiotis from a height that places them
beyond the reach of any bullets
aimed at them. One of these bal
loons fiom the German frontier 10
cenlly appeand at Kavuti It hover
ed above the ioitrcs thcic until the
olllecr in command became so exas
perated that lie ordered some oi the
soldiers to (lie at .the balloon and, if
possible, bring it to the ground, but
the range wa9 too great. The Get
mans continued their observations,
and when they had concluded they
returned whence they came.
SOLVED A UIIKAT I'HOllLCM.
It is believed that the Germans
have at last solved the problem of
aeiial navigation. These balloons
that have appeared over various pla
ces in Poland are uuder perfect con
trol. They move in any desired di
rection and the wiud currents have
no pcrjcptible effect upon them. In
fact, in at least one instance it is
known that the balloon sailed direct
ly against a 9trong wind.
KKADs MKK HOMANCE.
A few nights ago the inhabitents of
Warsaw were startled by an intense
ly bright light that fell from the sky
upon the., cjty., .Nothing , could be
seen save a path of light that utided
in a small focus. Suddenly the lay
of light swept in another direction
and when their eyes became accus
tomed to the daikuess that followed
they could sec far up in the sky a
balloon. Then it was seen that it
was an electric search light that had
caused the biillianl illumination and
that the Germans wcie continuing
their observations 'of Utftsi'du defen
ces with its aid. The light was ex
tinguished and the balloon, heading
westward toward the frontier of Prus
siu, disappeared.
roiiTiFiCATioNS usmxss.
Another balloon was seen over the
Proushkorf lailway station. It re
mained stationary for a time aud
then started in the direction of the
fort works near Relets, where it hov
eled a while, when it returned across
the frontier. Reports of similar oc
currences have been received from
Sosnovitsy aud other places along
the frontier. Russian ollicials say
that with manageable balloons the
whole system of warfare will be
changed. It is self-evident that nojio
of the present fortifications would he
able to withstand the attack from
above them. Shells could bo drop
ped with almost unerring certainty
and no city could defend itself froiu
an enemy far up in the air beyond
the reach of any missile. Even mo
dem cannon with their great tange
could not at present be used against
balloons, for the reason that gun
carriages have not been made that
will allow of a peipendicular eleva
tion and the falling shot might piove
disastrous.
MISS BERRY'S SCHOOL
Of the numerous Honolulu schools,
public and private, all more or less
good, no one belter fullils its mission
than Miss Berry's. Emma street.
Miss Berry's school is for young
children, and young children who
have any aptitude whatever to learn
make remarkable advancement theie.
Such is the testimony of parents As
a teacher and trainer of youth Miss
Retry has had many years of prac
tice, and. knows how to win and re
tain the confidence and affection of
her pupils.
Her industry, patience and zeal is
unflagging ; and her system of school
training is such that it prepares gnls
not to become "blue-stockings," but
women in the highest sense of the
word women who will be able to
adapt themselves to almost any voca
tion in life, and who will be apt to
remember and practice the lessons
of industry and integrity which they
learned while under Miss t Berry's
care.
