REPLY TO MR. KNUDSEH.
Edhok liCLLuris :
Referring to a communication
from Air. V. Knudsen that appeared
in the Daily IJlllutis of Satuuiay
evening last, permit me to say in re
gard to tuu school lot that was in
controversy between Mr. Knudsen
and the Board of Education, that the
survey of the land on which the con
tention was submitted to the Courts,
was made by .1. W. Makalcna not
V, 11. Peaie, and is dated February
I, 1853. This survey, as required
by the law at the time, bears the en
dorsement in writing, of Keoui Ana,
Minister of tl.e Interior, and of R.
Armstrong, Minister of Public In
struction. The lot is described as
being at l'okii, in the land of Ko
kaha, district of Waiinea on the
Island of Kauai.' The lease of the
laud from Kamcliameha III. to Mr.
J. II. Gruben is day month,
1S53, and is described as being in
YVaiawa, district of Waiinea. This
lease was recorded in the Registry
of Conveyances under date of March
17, 1853. A subsequent lease of a
piece of land, described as adjoining
the foregoing, was made by Kamclia
meha III. to Archer & LJruhen, un
der dale of July 1, 1853, and re
corded under date of May 15, 1857.
It will therefore lie seen that the
lot, for which Mr. Knudsen laid claim,
was not in the land of Waiawa, but
in that of Kekaha, neither of which
were under his control at the time.
It will also be seen that the date of
the survey to the Boatd of Educatiou
(Feb'y -Uh, :1853)was prior to the
date or the recording of both leases
referred to, and consequently the les
sees could have suffered no injury,
and had uo good reason for bringing
suit against the Board ot Educatiou.

GOL. SPALD1NCS NEW PLANT.
Euitok Bulletin :
1 lind the public misapprehend the
nature of the impiovements I have
been adding to my sugar factory,
and that unauthoiized comments of
the press have given color to reports
at variance with the truth. Under
these circumstances it is perhaps best
that I should ask you to make public
the following disclaimer.
It has never been my intention to
establish, nor have I attempted the
establishing of a "sugar refinery"
upon my plantation.
I have introduced none of the so
called "refining" processes, nor do I
employ any of the methods or chemi
cals used by sugar refiners.
The object of the machinery I have
added to my factory, with the
methods or processes followed, is
simply the economical production of
a greater amount of high grade or
pure raw sugar from a given quan
tity of cane juice. This machinery
is covered by letters patent in the
various sugar producing countries of
the world, and I have expended
much time and money in securing
the rights possessed by me for its
use. A proper regard for the inte
rests of oUieis, as well as myself,
piohibits my making public the
details of my woik, which in ordi
nary cases could but gratify a curio
sity common to any nuhou. But
from those who may be pecuniarily
inteiested in the matter I will be
pleased to receive letters or personal
applications for information regard
ing the improvements 1 have intro
duced, and I trust it will be in m'
power (as it certainly is my desire)
to extend to others the benefits of
