HOW TO WORD AN AD.
A man was denouncing newspaper
advertising to a crowd of listeners.
"Last neck," said he, "I had an
umbrella stolen from the vestibule of
the church. It was a gift, and, val
uing it highly, I spent double its
worth in advertising, but I have not
"How did you word the advertise
ment?" asked a merchant.
"Here it is," said tho man, pro
ducing a slip cut from a newspaper.
The merchant took it and read :
"Lost from the vestibule of the
church, last Sunday evening, a
black umbrella. The gentleman who
took it will be handsomely rewarded
by leaving it at No. High street."
" "Now." said the merchant, "lam
a libeial advertiser and have always
found it paid me well. A good deal
depends upon the manner in which
the advertisement is put. Let us try
your umbrella agaiu, and if you do
not acknowledge that advertising pays
I wilt purchase you a new one."
The merchant took a slip of paper
from his pocket and wrote:
"If the man who was seen to take
the umbrella from the vestibule of the
church last Sunday does not
wish to get into trouble and have a
stain cast upon the Christian charac
ter which he values so highly, he
will return il at ouco to No. High
This duly appeared in the paper
and the following morning the man
was astonished when he opened the
front door of his residence. On the
porch lay at least a dozen umbrellas
of all shades and si.es that had been
thrown in, while the front yard was
literally paved with umbrellas. Many
of them had notes attached to them
saying that they had been taken by
mistake, and begging the loser to
keep the little affair quiet. - Parks

REMARKABLE FREAK OF NATURE.
Carson, Nov. April U, 181)2. A
gentleman who arrived here from
Belmont, 120 miles southeast of this
city, tells of a remarkable freak of
nature. John Barnes and his wife
have a son eight years old. Six
years ago the hoy became suddenly
dumb and partly deaf. He remained
in that condition until one day last
The boy's parents were greatly
grieved by his loss of speech and his
almost total loss of hearing,' and
they were unable to account for the
misfortune, as the boy was unusu
ally healthy. Last Monday the boy's
mother, while hanging up her wash
in the yard, heard a loud outcry in
She entered for the purpose of
learning the source from which the
noise emanated. As she opened the
door the boy, whom she had left
alone in the house a few moments
before, ran up to her and shouted
something which she could not un
derstand. She was so overjoyed at
hearing the voice of her child, which
had been Bilent for six years, that
she fell on the floor in a faint.
When her husband reached home,
half an hour later, he found her in a
semi-conscious condition and the lad
bending over her talking to her. Mr.
Barnes was as agreeably surprised as
his wife, although his feelings were not
so forcibly manifested. The strang
est part of the matter is the boy
talks what is believed to be Russian,
a language which neither of his par
ents nor any one in Belmont can un
derstand. New York Herald.
