The witness was allowed in his direct
examination to look at papers con

writings as his. He was also asked
whether lie wns present at a meeting

witness referring to his notes gave
some remarks made by Wilcox at a
meeting ou May 7ih at Kalilii.
Wl'uess Have made no other
statements of any meeting; have
made a copy of anulhcr statement of
a meeting at Kalthi ; some one else
was there; three das before the ar

that commission was made in April,
1891, and not this year and dated
back ; drew salary in October and
since; am not posithe of Mr. Ash
ford's remarks with regaid to
the accomplishment of their under
taking under the law; carried n pis
tol at almost every meeting except
at the fust one; have not testified to
everything said at every meeting;
Wilcox was the only one who made
remarks ahou- -some wrongs done to
Hawaiiana; iiexer entered into any
dUcusbion on that subject ; was not
in favor of the objects of the lea
gue; joined it as a detective; con
sider the oalli 1 took at the league
not as binding as the oath taken in
Court; in fact, mumbled the words;
had bund on the Bible ; do not re
member the number present at the
meeting on April 10th; Mr. A3I1
ford ought to know, us he kept the
records ; cannot stale the exact num
ber but piust have been over ten ;
on April Hth meeting the number was
betweon twenty and thirty ; twenty
new members were admitted al that
meeting; all assented by the word
"ae;" could tell so by the tone of
voice; did not have any way of find
ing out the number of members, as
there were others sworn in by the
executive council; all the discussions
were made in a moderate tone ; at
tended public meetings but nus not
a speaker; have heard the words
"me ka ikaika" used with regard to
forcible language; impression of the
words used at the league meeting
meant "force of arms;" never
studied English grammar; never
knew that Ashford is a Hawaiian
Mr. Hartwell then 1 cad from the
transcription of the stenographer's
notes the testimony of the witness
liiven yesterday, and asked htm
which meeting thut was.
Witness The second, April 14th;
cannot say which meeting it wm the
woids "kapae i ka Moiwahine" (set
aside the Queen) were used ; did not
bay that the term was not used by
Wilcox at the second meeting; can

Witness- Cannot state by refer

language was use by Wilcox ; at the
meeting the rest of the crowd re

force) was used al the meeting on
April Hth ; Ibis was said before the
new members took the oath ; Ash

Lane and others were present at this
meeting; think Markham, Kila,
Crow, were theru also; am uncertain
us to who were present ut the meeting
when Wilcox baid "kapae i ku Moi

the expression with the addition of
"with foice" was used Ivuhuliawal,

11 .Mr Cri'igliton Can you tell
by leffii'iii'i' to your notes whether

Witness Same meeting, April 21,
at Ashford's Iinuij5 all recruits were
nominated by ini'inuers.
Robert Ituiniik 1, sworn Am ollice

me to go there ; arrived there shortly
after b; think Ihey had a meeting
before my arrival; was invited to
come in and Wilcox asked me to sit

object of the meeting was the benefit
of the Ilawaiians and equal rights,
also that they were going to the Leg
islature to get a new Constitution :
don't remember the oath ; only know
a little; swearing to God deatli to
traitois ; V. V. Ashford adminlsU'ied

Hawuiiau, with the hand on the Bible ;
the oath was icpeated; don't know
who owns the house ; saw Ashford and
Mrs. Kuhanauui there; the house is

The Court adjourned at 3:10
o'clock till to-morrow morning.
I noticed in this morning's issue of
the Advertiser two letters. One sign
ed "Veritas" I could not under
stand, but there is 110 mistaking the
meaning of the one signed "IX L.
Huntsman." He gives us to under
stand that they, the annexationists,
arc not quite ready, and we must
wait awhile. I am really sorry ; for
this procrastination is ruining the
islands by giving foreign nations the
idea that Her Majesty's Government
is not siillicicntly strong to put down
anarch', and few men will invest
money in a country where such peo
ple as ). L. Huntsman and his
friends are allowed to foment and
spout treason uninterruptedly. Mr.
Huntsman mistakes my reason for
not publishing my name. I have no
axe to grind, am perfectly independ
ent of any person or persons in the
kingdom, from Her Majesty to the'
lowest of her subjects; but it he and
his friends will only hasten their per
formance I will trove to him how lit
tle I care for the protection of my
per-on, by doing myself the pleasure
of looking for him and his particular
friend, if I am compelled to examine
eveiy iron lank in the city. Until
then we will postpone the introduc
