quitable Life Ass
Society of the United States.
An Eminently Conservative and Safe Company,
The consideration of Hist importance in judging of tlio condition of
any llnaiielnl tnslilulmii (nntl notably of a lilu assurance company, the ma
Jorily of whose contracts extend over long potiods of years) is its surplus
stremjlh. The Eipiitable has, over and nbovu all liabilities, a larger sur
plus thau any other assurance company.
Assets, Dec. 31, 1891,
LIABILITIES, including the Resents on all existing Policies, (4
por cent. Standard) and Special Reserve) (toward the es
tablishment ol a 3'j per cent, valuation") ul $1,500,000 109,905,537.82
Surplus, - - - $632,980.56
This Surplus t cumins after making provision for every obligation, on a
rigid calculation of Liabilities based on the standard preset ibed by the In
surance Law of the State of New Yotk, which assumes that Assets will be
Invested so it" to leali.e interest at the rate of 4 per cent, per nnnutii. In
addition to this, in a spirit of conei vatistn, the Directors of the Society,
on the leconituenihtion of its Finance Committee, have set aside a Special
Additional Uesene, looking towards even a more stringent and conservative
future standaid of valuation than the law now ptescribes.

Hep. Akina read for tltu llrst time

At 1 :4o the Assembly resolved
into Committee of the Whole and
took up the consideration of the Ap
propiiatiou Hill, Hep. lvatinamauo in
the chair. The items consideied
were under the Judiciary Department
and as follows:
Salary Ciieuit Judge, Kauai, 4000.
Noble Pua moved 8:5000. Hep
Kauiauoha moved S3"00. Noble
Cornwall was in favor of S.'IGOO.
Rep. Akina, in favor as in the bill.
Hep. Smith was in favor of the
amount as in the bill. He consideied
that if the Government desited good
service they should give good pay.
He believed in economy, it theichad
been two judges for Kauai lie would
have favored leduction to one, but
that one should be a good man, fit to
lill the office. The pieseut incum
bent is looked up tp and respected by
all on the Island, and the couutiy
can ill nfford to dispense with his
seivices. True that Kauai was a
small island, but lor all that it was
the "Gaiden Island" of the group.
Rep. Nawahi favored 3000 ; he did
not think that there was any of fear
of the judge throwing up the position
even if his salary was lowered.
On motion the item passed at
The next item relating to "Travel

Noble Marsden moved 8'2, 100.
Rep. Kanealii sujd that he hardly
knew what to do, this bill was sup
posed to be presented by the Minis
ters but they voted one way and the
other; they woic divided in opinion.
He had just noticed two of the Min
isters, Parker and Spencer, voting
for the items as presented and an
other (Whiting) voting against.
Noble Neumann objected to the
refeieuce made to the Cabinet, the'
were not under discussion ; but to as
sist the member who had just spoken,
to a subject, he would move that the
item be made 8"00 for the peiiod.
Rep. Kanealii responded holly and
decried "the previous speaker as boy
ish in his action, and undignified in
speech. He (the speaker) was there
as a representative fiom the district
of Wailuku, he desired to be treated
with proper courtesy He had
tieatedthe Noble with couitesy, but
he had noticed a growing disposition
on the part of the Nobles, since the
first day, not to tieat the Represen

Some fiuther discussion ensued
and a motion to pass the amount, as
in the Bill, was lo3t by a vote of 21
