MR. M'KINLEY'S MOULDY CHEST
NUT. Wh'it Mr. McKinley said upon
tuking the chair is extieiuely com
nionpluce, and has been repeated by
him a hundred times. "We propose
to raise our money for public ex
penses," he said, "by taxing the
pioducls of other nations rather than
by taxing the product of our own."
Why, then, was the duty on raw
sugar repealed? That is the pioduct
of other nations. We received S50,
000,000 cf revenue from those sugur
produeiiig countries, according lo
the McKinley idea, by taxing their
products. The Tieasury is sadl' 111
want of that revenue at this lime.
There will be abundant opportunity
between now and November for
McKinley and others to explain why
they thus exempted foreigners from
a tux of $50,000,000 which the said
foreigners hud been paying for many
years without the slightest complaint.

The following telegram from New
York, June 25, to the San Francisco
papers recounts the sad plight of a
man who lately left the Queen's Hos
pital here to go home to England to
die. Mr. Yeates who is referred to
had many friends in Honolulu who
will be dislressed ut hearing of the
outrage committed on him iu his
helpless state. The telegraphed
story follows:
Two minutes before the steamer
Belgenland sailed from her pier at
Jersey City this morning one of the
steerage passengers was hurriedly
put ashore. He wus a lull, emaciat
ed yi.ung man and was dying of con
sumption. He had surrendered his
ticket the night befoie and had spent
twelve hours on board. His name
was F. Williain Yeates. Two brawny
sailors carried the sick man to an
armchair on the pier outside Super
intendent Shackles' olllce. His
steamer li link and a small valise were
placed beside him and the steamer
sailed away for Antwerp.
Yeates I: id two hemorrhages on
boaid the steamer, aad the doctor
who attended him told Captain Uentz
that his pussciiuer would not live the
voyagu out. The ciiptulu ordered
Yeates off his ship, and hud his sail
ors cany out Ids command. He did
not return the passenger's ticket.
When Policeman Lucystcr first
saw cnlci he was silling in the
chair on Ihu pier coughing. This
was at 0 o'clock iu the morning. Tho
policeman sent for u patrol wagon,
mid wanted to take Yeates to tho
Hospital. At .'1:110 p. 111. a friend
appeared, a young Englishman, who
had met Yeates on u train between
Chicago and Now York. He curried
Hie bick man to Rye's Hotel, ai.d the
clerk curried the coughing man up

Yeates found great dilllciilty in
speaking, but managed to give his
story to a reporter. He is an Eng
lishman wliit has been working as a
bookkeeper iu Honolulu for several
years. Ho was stricken with con
sumption last full and this spring de

might die among his relatives in
Loudon. Dr. J. D, McGill of Jer
bcy City made an examination of the
consumptive to-night. He found
that one lung wus entirely gone and
lliat the other was affected.
"He may live forty-eight hours,"
said the physiciuu, "or he may hang
011 a mouth, 1 think il was" u most
cruel and inhuman thing to put him
off the bout. Ho in trying to get
