tiLTcptaulu for iiiL'UMiriiig values as
gold coin, I will refer tho reader to
the first 8G0,000,000 of cheap money
paper money treasury notes, is
sued ufter the commencement of the
Amcricau civil war and made "re
ceivable in payment of duties on im
ports, a lawful money, and a legal
teuder." The fact must not be lost
sight of, that no part of the S00,
000,000 then issued ever depreciated
a farthing and it was not redeemable
in gold coin either, yet it continued
to be received at the Treasury on a
par wilh gold when gold was selling
al S2.85 in the partially demonetized
llus should he positive pi oof that
had the Government made all the
greenbacks a full legal lender, in
stead of sending them out partially
demonetized and repudiated, they
would never have fallen below par.
So it may be seen that by the process
of civilized law Congiess made the
SG0,000,000Treasury notes as accept
able as gold for all money put poses
both by the Government and by the
people, and that fact caused the bank
associations of Boston, New York
and Philadelphia to send a committee
to besiege Congress and the Govern
ment, who by arguments and threats
intimidated Congress from making
any moie such good money, if it did
they would "pack up their gold und
leave the couutiy."
History informs us that Congress
complied with their demands by mak
ing the greenback only a partial legal
tender. That is, they demanded
that the "lntei est on the public debt'"
and "duties on imports must be made
payable in gold coin only" and they
were so made, which opened a market
for their gold which nothing else was
ullowed to 1111, and it compelled the
Government to shin through Wall
street aud among the associated
banks to obtain the gold for itt, inter
est payments, and forced eveiy im
porter to do the same thing to secure
the nold for their import payments.
Congress having made gold a
special favorite and compelled the
government to repudiate its own
notes, caused the giccuback to de
preciate, or, moie truly, caused gold
to advance in price, by making a de
mand foi it thai nothing else would
fill. Gold alone advanced as the
products of the farm and factoiy did
not advance in price measured by
greenbacks, any more than should
ne expected in war time, gold being
cornered and manipulated by the gold
bugs and bank associations. No gold
being in circulation save for Hie Iwo
purposes above named, the green
back became the standard of value
in all tiudc and productive business
and remained so for a decade.

The display of life in the alleged
sleepy town of Laliaina during the

give her detractors reason to pause
The Kamelnunelia Glee Club gave a
concert at Wainee Church on Satur

performance of tho evening was
"Annie Laurie." A duet by two

was deservedly well received. On
the whole the boys aie to be congra

On the following Monduy the Ka
