An Italian Cruisor.
Tho statuo of Columbus whk'li tho
Italian oilr.ons of tlio country aro
going to present to this inly on tho
occasion of our Columbian I'oliunu
tion in commonioration of tho dis
covery of Amorica, is oxpoctod hoio
within two months. It is tho work
of an Italian sculptor, Gnctoua
llusso, and is now receiving its finish
ing touulius in Italy. It will cross
tho ocean on a transport, which will
bo accompanied by a cruiser of tlie
Italian navy, the Giovanni Bausati.
Tho arrival of the esf-el will proba
bly begin New York's big eelebia
tiou. Tho statuo is 12 feet high, of
marble, and stands on a richly orna
mented column and pedestal of rod
grand e, I lie whole 7o feet high. It
is to bo placed at tho Kighth-avonuo
entrance to Central Park. Tlio
statuo will bo divided into many
portions, each of which will be pack
ed separately and with groat caie in
tho hold of tho ttnu&port. After its
arrival hoio tho statue will be built
up from its site, piece by piece.
Tho transport in which it will bo
packed is tho Garigliano, a steam
vessel of 935 tons. She is 180 feet
long, 28 feet beam, and draws 111
foot. She is a naval vo-ol, ory
lightly armed, and was built merely
for tho transportation of troop, and
stores. Sho carries only two guns.
Her consort, tho Giovanni Ilausan,
will bring over tho Italian ollicials
and naval ollicors who aie to attend
tho celebration. Sho is. a modern
cruisor of high type, and will greatly
interest our naval constructors.
Thuro was an impic-Mon that a
big Italian battleship would accom
pany tho transport. That (his is not
tho case will cause some disappoint
ment, but the Batisan will probably
prove of more intoiost to us than
any battleship which 1 1 ;i Iy posses-o,
inasmuch as sho is one of the best
specimens of .English-built unann
orod cruisers of the typo which
Secretary Tracy says should form
tho bulk of tho American navy.
Tho Baus.au was built by the
Armstrongs and might almost bo
called tho twin of the famous Chilean
cruiser Esmeralda, about which there
was so much talk during our trouble
with Chile. Tho Esmeralda was also
built by tho Armstrongs. Both have
1U00 tons displacement and (KXX)
horse-power, with a speed of L71.
knots. The "Bausan is a trifle longer
than tho Esmeralda, whoso length is
281 feet and beam 12 feet. Of Amer
ican cruisers tho Boston piolmbly is
most like tho Bausan. Her length
is 270 feet, beam -12 feet, displace
ment 3189 tons, horse-power ,-1031),
and speed 15.15 knots.
Tho Bausan carries a much nioie
powerful armament than ;uy Amor
ican cruiser of her class. Her main
battery consists of two 10-inch and
six (5-inch breech-loading rifles. Her
coal capacity enables her to cover
.r)000 miles at a speed of 10 knots an
hour. It is tho intention of tho
Italian visitors to lemain hoio with
tho Bausan until after tho great in
ternational naval review in Hamilton
Roads and New York harbor, which
will occur not April and May, after
tho completion of a few nunc of our
.warships. New Vnrh Sun,
A New Car-Starter.
One of the Hayes-sheet earn slop
ped tho other day. The cable was
not broken, nor was thero a belliger
ent and obstinate teamster disputing
tho right of way. Thoro was appar
ently) no reason why this particular
car should emulate tho example of
"grandfather's clock," but it did,
and whether it would over "run
again" was a question which, after a
minute or so, began to agitato tho
minds of tho passengers, the onlook
ers and tho gripmon further down
the line.
Out on tho "grip" an excited
group gathered around the stalwait
conductor, who had, apparently,
gone suddenly crazy, for he was
dancing about, waving his arms, and
making faces which would have
chilled tho hot blood of a Bengal
tigor, had such an animal been pie
sont. '.'A bug has got into my ear," ho
explained, between jumps, "and ho
is buzzing like a million sawmills,
and kicking liko a loco mustang! Get
him out, somebody, or I shall die
right hero!"
A stout-hearted young man volun
teered his sorvicos, and pooping into
tho cavernous depths of the auricu
lar appondago, descried tho lively in
truder. Ho jabbed at him with his
forefinger, and ho poked at him in
effectually with tho end of a lead
pencil; tho conductor danced and
grimaced worse than boforo, and
"swear words" began to iloat upon
tho air from tho blockaded cars in
tho rear.
At this juncture a doniuro-looking
little dark-oyed woman full of tho
inspiration which comes to most of
her sex in emergencies extended
ono daintily gloved hand with a
mysterious something between the
thumb and finger thereof. That
"something" was an "invisible" hair
pin, tho rounded end of which was
quickly slipped over the struggling
bug riata fashion and ho was d rag
ed forth iu triumph,
The conductor heaved a mighty
sigh of relief, in which he was joined
by the sympathizing spectators. The
gripman took up his lever, and the
llnyes-street cable-car system, on the
up line, was in motion again - thanks
to the woman's hairpin! S. 1 Call.
