in Hawaii. In 1885, when emigrants
wore first despatched to Hawaii,
practically no trade was dono with
Hint country, but o cry year ws an
increasing oxpoit hade, nud the
Mniuichi remarks with satisfaction
that it is ono great benefit which
Japan has derived from her emi
grants. Tho total number of Japa
nese emigrants in Hawaii now is
21,120, not including tho last ship
ment which loft horo in June, num
bering 1,082, nor 515 who hao gone
to Hawaii on their own responsibil
ity. Tho number of births lias been
6-11, so this giies a grand total of
23,358 of Japanese who are or have
beoii employed by conduct in Ha
waii. Tho number of deaths in the
sovon years has been 1,025, and the
number of emigrants returned or
gone to America 2,3!) I. The actual
number of einigiauts there is 18,312,
and tho total amount of their aggre
gate savings is 110,031. Added to
this sotnothing like ,310, 115 has
boon sent homo, making a total - -ing

Yamanouchi (Secretary of tho Im
perial Household); and Mr. Tanaka
(Master of ceremonies).

to railroad linos and putting a slop
to traffic. Rivers rose and many
places wore destroyed by tho floods

from Franco has met with an acci
dent to hor engines on route to
Japan and had to put into Port Said
By an Imperial ordinance tho con
sular jurisdiction of Portugal in
Japan has been abolished. Tho
Portuguese representative has loft

the French Legation. Trado and
banking operations for tho past six
months both in China and Japan
have fallen off considerably.
A now Ministry has been formed
in Japan under tho Premiership of
Count Ito. An attempt was made
to assassinate Count Okumu and
Mr. Kono, two members of tho late
Ministry, by sending oxplosho
bombs in parcels addressed to them.
Tho nature of tho contents was for
tunately discovered before any in
jury was done. Sevoral shipwiecks
have taken place owing to tho &nveio
storms and hurricanes during o
last two months.
