Crusted with hoary cinders;
Naught now 's left of thy fearful Ire, '
Thy cool shades only pento inspire,

Yet onio nilouii thy virgin breast

TKEASURE TRAIN.
Pointer for Pondorers on Horner's

Harper's Voting People) lias tlio
following on Undo Sam's treasure
train that lately crossed tho conti
nent: Probably tho richest train of cars
that oer traellod oyoi rails w as ono
tlittt loft San Francisco a few das
ago, carrying Undo Sam's gold com
for use in tho East. Tho train as
composed of fho cars, two of which
Wore constructed of wrought steel,
and supposed to bo bullet and bomb
proof. Thoso two cars weru laden
with BOO wooden boxes, each of
which contained $10,000 in Ii o-dollar
and ten-dollar pieces, aggregating
tho enormous sum of 20,O(J0.O0O.
Tho boxes woro shipped as register
ed mail packages, and were guarded
by 51 Jiailwny Mail Senico men.
This immense sum is only ono-fifth
part of a quantity of gold that has
been stored at San Francisco for up
wards of twenty years, and it is said
that tho sacks containing it nctunlly
rotted and bioko open from tho
effects of dust and age. Young
readeis may manul at so largo a
treasure bointr Kent hidden awav iu
vaults for bo long a time, and ask
why it was not in circulation. At
first sight it would appear that tho
country would bo so much tho richor
it so many millions woro circulating
among tho people. But, as a matter
of fact, while tho gold wasvhidden
away, tlio money was actually in cir
culation, for it was represented by
tho ''greenbacks" with which wo aio
all more or less familiar, oven if wo
aio not so familiar with thorn as we
should like to be. Eorovcry green
back issued by tho Goernmont,
thero must bo a ceilain proportion
of its money -aluo in gold sloied in
tho United Slates Treasury. If this
woro not so, Government might go
on issuing bills as fast as thoy could
bo printed, and tlion they might dis
tribute thorn among tho people and
u erj body bo rich.
How moo that would bo, if it could
only bo done! But it cannot, for
paper has no leal value of its own;
and iu onler to make an engraved
piece of greon-baekod paper valu
able, it must lepresent a certain,
amount of valuable metal actually
in hand. This is a subject that is
not easy to bo understood; indeed,
in some of its aspects it is at this
present time- pu.ling tho wisest
heads in tho woild.
