Ooorco LycurgUB Negotiating for tho
Purclmao of tho Stonmship Zain
bosl for tho Island Trado.
It hns boon rumored for several
tlnjs that nrrnngomonts had licon
consummated Tor tho establishment
of a lino of steutnors botweon Port
land and tho Sandwich Islands.
This lino has boon talked of for
some time, and, as it would bo tho
means of establishing closer com
mercial relations between this city
and tho islands, tho peoplo of t'ort
land aro naturally very much inter
ested in it. It was roportod that
Goorgo Lyeurgus, the man interest
ed iu tho enterprise from the Hawai
ian sidoj had ptiruhned the steamer
Zambesi of the Upton line, and that
tho proposed commercial relations
wore to bo established at once.
"Wo were negotiating for the pur
chase of tho Zambesi,'' said Mr.
Lyourgus last evening, "but have not
j'ot made any deal. Tho steamer
was offered to us for SfiO.OOO in silver,
but on my return from tho islands
a fow days ago 1 learned that she
was chartered by tho Northern Paci
fic, or some other company, and that
she would yet havo to make a trip
or two more. As soon as her charter
oxpiros I think wo shall bo ablo to
mako sonic deal whereby we can
establish this lino of steamers at
once. Tho prico is very reasonable,
and wo shall eithor buj her or
chartor her. If wo can't get the
Zambesi I don't think thoio is a
steamer on tho coast suitable for our
purpose that wo can got. Wo intend
to engage principally in tho fruit
trado, and 1 think it will prove pro
fitable both for Portland and tho
islands. Wo shall export principally
bananas, pineapples, mangoes and
such other fruits as grow native to
our islands, and leave tho sugar trado
to San Francisco. In exchange for
our fruit products wo expect to im
port flour and feed. The islands
last yoar paid to San Francisco linns
$373,000 for flour and $105,000 for
grain and feed. Portland can sell
flour and food cheapor than San
Francisco, and, in return, can buy
fruits direct from tho islands cheapor
than from San Francisco. A direct
lino of steamers botweon Portland
and tho islands will savo a commis
sion at both ends, and tho advantage
is readily seen. Thoro is no reason
why Portland should pay San Fran
cisco a commission on our fruits, and
no reason why tho islands should
pay San Franeisco a commission on
Oregon Hour and feed. Closor com
mercial relations must provo profit
able both to Portland and tho isl
ands, and I see no reason why tho
enterprise should not bo a success.
I am in hopes that our plans will
soon bo consummated. Tho result
will bo satisfactory both to tho
islands and to Portland, I know, as
fruit will bo cheaper here, and that
moans that more will bo used. If
more is used our exports will bo
larger and tho fruit industry on tho
islands will onco nioro prosper."
THE POLITIC VL SITUATION.
Speaking of tho political situation
on tho islands, Mr. Lycurgus said:
"When I loft on the Uth of last
month tho government had a now
cabinet much nioro satisfactory to
the people than tho old. Paul Neu
mann, an old San Franciscan, w ho
was attorney-general of tho islands
for two consecutive terms in the
early 80's, is onco more reinstated in
his old place. He is one of tho
brightest politicians on tho islands,
and his appointment meet with
general satisfaction. Tho queen is
rapidly regaining tho good will of
her subjects, and thoro aro now no
signs of a revolution. Sho ia bolter
liked both by tho whites and natives
than ovor, and tho now cabinet on
the whole is satisfactory to all. The
queen has cut down tho salary of
most of the ollicials of her govern
ment, and an increased tariff lia
been placed on many articles of ex
port, so that tho financial prospo 'ts
of tho country aro alo very much
brighter." Portland Or 'jjoniwi.
Water Rights Again.
Another disputo ovor water rights
was settled in the Police Com t Tues
day. Kuhia and Mi nia, natives,
wore arrested for assault anil bat
tery on Ah Loong at Kalihi on Oct
Tho evidence wont to show that
on that day Ah Leung and another
Chinaman were lying in the guava
bushes near the stream watching
that no ono would divert tho water
from thoir patches, claiming tho
right on that day. They owned one
half of tho right and the natives the
other half. Kuhia and Mania hap
pened to como along and saw tho
stream diverted from thoir land.
Thoy removed tho obstruction and
causod the water to go their way.
Tho Chinamen remonstrated and
put a huge bowlder in tho middle of
the stream to divort its course. Tho
Chinamen claimed that Kuhia
snatched a stick out of Ah Leong's
hand and struck him, knocking him
Tho natives, however, denied this,
and according to Kuhia's ovidouco
Ah Loong was seated on a bank, and
iu his otrort to take the stick away
from him ho fell on tho stone, cut
ting himsolf. He then smeared him
self with tho carmine.
A Portuguese woman stated that
sho had seen Kuhia strike the China
man. Mania was discharged. Kuhia
was sentenced to pay a fine of $2."S.
Aro your child ron subject to croup?
If so, you should never be without
a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy. It is a certain euro for
croup, and has never been known to
fail. If given freely as soon as the
croupy cough appoars it will pre
vent the attack. It is the solo reli
