As you solicit correspondence from
all pnrtios irrospoctivo of nationnlity
or politics, I claim the right, with
your pormission, of protesting
against, the frequency of Into, ol
somo of your correspondents parti
cularly "Hawaiian" in making a
fling at tho United States at ovorj'
opportunity not that tho United
Statos cares a hit, or will romovo ono
of her warships in consoquonco; but
I do not think it tho correct, thing
to mislead your readers into think
ing that tho sentiments of "Hawai
ian" as at all times oxprossed when
oxprossed at all, aro tho sontinionts
of tho Hawaiian people or ovon ono
of them, when loft independently to
thoir own froo viows. "Hawaiian"
would havoyou boliovotho United
Statos is waiting anxiously togobblo
Hawaii noi, as a hen would devour a
worm, but tho truo and at all intolli1
gont Hawaiian does not need tho
groat wisdom of immigrants like this
"Hawaiian" to onablo him to know
Now till, and with ono voice, will
admit that tho United Statos has to
a groat oxlont mado Hawaii what it
is to-dav. viz., ono of tho healthiest
littlo countries, financially, on tho
globe, and as God has mado it ono
of tho most dosirablo countries
physically I think I am safo in stat
ing that wo aro blessed with tho
pnvilogo of occupying ono of tho
most favored spots on earth. Several
firms have taken advantage of tho
good times in the past (through
tho United States) and bought
merchandise from .England and
Germany, and mado thomsolves
rich thoroby never patronizing tho
United. Statos, through whom all
this good fortune comes, ono cent,
comparatively speaking, and now
that we aro boinir tested with tho
thumb-scrows, through tho McKin
loy Bill, and dosonedly too, thoro is
a groat howl' against tho United
Statos. Wo aro not paupers; why
should wo not mako remuneration
for favors which wo rocoivo? If tho
U. S. will give us value received for
a loaso of Poarl Harbor, viz., spond
money on and improve Pearl Har
bor and give us all tho advantago in
rogard to our exports that any ono
of tho United Stales receives, why
should wo play "dog in tho mauler"
in refusing to loan to tho United
Statos that which wo can in no othor
way make uso of?
1 do not believe in annexation from
tho standpoint of an Amorican or
Hawaiian, but I do boliovo that if
wo can turn Poarl Harbor to such
an account as to bo of pecuniary
bonofit to tho many (at present)
noody people (natives and foreigners)
in this country, it is nothing loss
than our duty that wo should do so;
for thoro are manj- of us who cannot
travel in foreign lauds on our wealth.
Neither do wo all have that super
abundance of local knowledge, train
ing and experience that the harder
tho times tlio more wo mako. Neither
do all of us have gall enough to
mako ourselves nuisances nor are wo
able to disguise ourselves by taking
a bath or avert a sontonco by escap
ing an examination and prosocution.
Mrt "Hawaiian," if when you write
derogatory to everything Amorican
in future 3011 will first use- Sapolio
wo may not recognize you. X.
A. Public Nuisance.
I would like to call tho attention
of tho proper authorities to a public
nuisance existing in tho shapb of an
open sower, situated on tho niauka
side of Queon street, near Wator
house's hardware store. Tho vilo
smell arising from said sowor, at all
times, is enough to knock anyone
down that chances to pass by thoro,
and is a moiiace to tho public hoalth.
Such an outrage should not bo al
lowed to exist in any respectable
community, and should bo remedied
at once. Citizen.

Mr. Mooro, tho postmaster at
Bradshaw, Va., after reading an ad
vortisomont of Chamberlain's Colic,
Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, con
cluded to try a small bottle of it.
Ho says: "I used it in-two cases for
colic and throe for diarrhoea with
perfect satisfaction. I hao handled
and used a groat deal of patent
medicine, but novor tried any that
gave as good results as this. For

The singular properties of tho number
nine are woll-kilown to arithmetician.
The following is una of thu most interest
ing. If tho cardinal numbers from 1 to 9
inclusive, omitting 8, be used as a multi-
Cllcand, and any ono of thorn, multiplied
y 0, ho used as a multiplier, the result
will present a succession of figures tho
same as that multiplied hv tho 1). For ox-

A similar result will be obtained by using
all thu other numbers, Including 8 (72).
Another interesting fact Is that there aro
