Tlio strangest eargo (hat over ar
rived at Honolulu was on the. bark
Edward James, from Portland, Ore
gon. It consisted of lumber, live
stoek, salt, salmon, dried apples, four
bears, and nearly a hundred cats. A
man heard that the Sandwich Isl
anders were very anxious to have
some eats, and ho paid twenty-live
cents apiece to the Portland boys,
who probably stole them. At any
rate, tlio hark sailed away, and
when, ton days out a dreadful storm
arose, and tho ship was tossed about
at a lively rato. In tho midst of it
all the bears broke loose, and when
the cattle saw them thoy bellowed
I until thoy were heard above tho lury
i of the gale. Tlio captain seized a
i gun to shoot the bears, to save tho
cattle, but when ho went below,
whoro it was pitch dark, there
I gleamed in all directions so many
fiery oyes of cattle, boars, and cats,
i that ho iled in dismay. But in tho
I ond a bear was killed, a lot of cats
thrown overboard, and tho vessel

Tho Scottish Thistle- Club had a
grand tiino Mondaj' night. Visitors
from H. 13. M. S. Daphne and tho

the Sons of St. George also partici

to Mr. W. F. Wilson from a visit to i
his old homo in Scotland, and tho
esteemed member gave a highly in- j

visitors to Burns's cottage tho past ,
season numbered 30,000. Mr. Walter
Hill, tho Club's honorary member, j
presided with rare tact, introducing i
every participant with something
facetious that created explosive ,
smiles. Mr. .1. H. Sopor, Mr. T. S. '
Douglas, Mr. W. H. Baird, Mr
Smith o'f the' Manna Ala, Mr. Pur -
chasoof the Daphne, Mr. Tumor and
Mr. Stevenson of tho Sons of St.

Lough. Lighthouse No. 2, which
warns vessels from running aground
near tho entrance to the Lough, is
built of wood, and is not a very

without paying any attoution to tlio
lighthouse, which it suddenly hit
Instead of tho steamer's boinir wreck
ed tho lighthouse was wrecked and
toppled over into tho sea. Tho
lighthouse did not sink, but floated
on tho waves, while tho inmates
shouted for help, Tlio crow of tlio
Medway hastened to lower a boat
and rowed to whoro tho lighthouse
was floating. Two of tho inmates of
tho lighthouse wore drowned and
two were rescued.
