Salvation Army speaks favorably of

tion of "Darkest England," but

that too much cash was sunk in

Vignaux won the first play in an '
international two-days' balk-lino
billiard match, 12(K) up, (500 each '
day, with Schaofer in Paris. In the
fifteenth essay Sehaefor niado a i
pretty run of 127 by skill at close '
play. Ho broke down on an easy '
carom and Vignaux scored the neces- ,
sary (00, leaving the balls well placed
for his opening the swontl day.
Twenty-two innings wofe played,
the highest runs of eachsido being:
Schaofer, 127, 7!1, (5.t; Vignaux, 5)8, 81),

is that tho Frenchmen back Sehaefor,

At a meeting of the creditors of
tho Liberator Building Society in
London on tho 20th inst., there was
a stormy scone. Tho collapse of tho
society- swept away the savings of
years of many mechanics, shopkeep
ers and others of small means.
During tho meeting a statement
was made that .lames Spencer Bal
four, one of tho principal men of the
society and a member of tin House
of Commons, had sold all his pro
perly in Groat' Britain and (led to
Spain.
liis son was present at the meet
ing and said that to the best or his
knowledge his father's property was
not sold, and that his father was not
in-Spain. Ho declined to say where
tho older Balfour was, and a great
uproar ensued.
J. V. Hobbs, tho well-known Lon
don builder, and CI. II. Wright, a
solicitor, who wore arrested on De
cember 12lh on charges of forgery
in connection with the failure of tho
Liberator Society and the Lands In
vestment Trust, have had additional
charges preferred against I hem.
Hobbs will also have to answer for
tho theft of a large sum of money
belonging to his own firm, .1. AV.
Hobbs A: Co,, limited. Tho now
charge against Wright is that he
stole a check for 2500 belonging to
the Liberator Society. It is said that
Hobbs it Co. owe the Liberator So
ciety jU2,05)il,(X)l).
