Tho first regular Cutmrdur in 1840
was tho Britannia, 21)7 by 31 by 22,
tonnngo 50."0, horso-powor 710, says
tho St. Jnmos Budget. Tho latest
will bo 600 foot long, (15 foot wide,
and about 1.1,000 tons gross register,
with a propelling force of, sa 15,
(XX) horses nominal. Both tonnage
and etigino havo thus enormously
increased in a few years' time, bo
yoncl tho imagination or belief of
men now living; while the general
inereaso in our mercantile marine
may bo interestingly noted by com
paring tho size of Lloyd's Register
of 1831 an octavo volume of 7 J by
o hy 1.J inches with tho two fine
qttaftos'of tho year 18D2, and 11 A by
10 by 2 inches, giving full particu
lars "of "tho 11,1100 steamships and
sailing vessels, representing some
11,928,(521 tons, which mako up the
fleet of Great Britain and hor colo
nies! Tho pleasure ''steamship of tho
future" is a vast structure built of a
metal combining almost unlimited
strength with undreamt of lightness.
Her dimensions will approximately
bo three- times greater than the
steamship Campania namely, 1S00
feet ly 1!)0 feet, and she will" be so
constructed that, like the well-known
polype Hydra of our ponds, should
she by any possibility bo damaged
1)3' collision or stranding, each part
of her would live and maintain a
soparato existence tho outcome of
tho "cellular" system, of which wo
now see but tho initial application.
Save for four towering but slender
poles, doing duty for signalling and
effect, tho Alunnuia willbo mastless;
but her gigantic oval-shaped "smoke
stacks" will break tho monotony of
an outline which otherwiso will
roughly resemble tho Crystal Palace
at Sydenham as it was originally
built minus its transepts and water
towers. Steam and electricity com
bined will be utilized to drive this
mighty mass at great speed through
tho waters; three, if not six, propel
lers being called into requisition for
tho purpose. A perfect system of
ventilation, sanitation, water supply.
lighting, heating and cooking will
reign throughout tho noble vessel;
illumination and tho preparing of
food being effected entirely by tho
aid of tho goddess "Eloetra."
A hotel like tho Motropolo will bo
tho model upon which tho domestic
arrangements of this singular steam
ship will bo based. There will bo
public dining and drawing rooms,
accommodation for private parties,
ladies' boudoirs, snuggeries for smok
ing, billiard-rooms (practicable iu
lino weather), a library alliliated with
Mudio's, a duly licensed place of
worship, a concert-room and theater,
a tennis court, a rifle gallery, a
gymnasium and every possible and
imaginable facility for athletic exor
cise and recreation. But the main
feature will bo tho general division
of this floating palaco into tenements
or Hats complete in themselves, and
consisting of say two good-sized sitting-rooms
and four or live bed
rooms, with domestic otlices at
tached. These will bo taken by tho year,
leased or sold in perpetuity to fam
ilies desirous of tho advantages but
not possessing tho means of keeping
up a yacht, but who will readily pay
a largo rental for tho privilege of
having a homo all tho year round
which they can join at any port,
sublet if thoy choose, and where
they can always enjoy congenial
society amid varied scones in a
gonial climate. Tho route of tho
Aluminia will bo determined by bal
lot; tho general service will bo as at
any largo hotel ashore. A round of
amusements will bo provided, and
families will bo able to preserve
strict privacy or join tho general
throng, as thoj desire.
Tho one thing strictly prohibited
on board will bo private pianos and
tho introduction of domestic pots,
such as oats and dogs. No postman
or telegraph boy will over interrupt
tho rouosoof these marine domiciles.
Seasickness will practically be ban
ished, and those who hereafter "go
down to tho sea in ships" and "do
business iu great waters" will, in
passing tho "steamship of tho fut
ure," salute with mingled astonish
ment and reverence the ideal of Sir
Thomas Moore's "Utopia" riding in
