London, Jnnuarv 12. Tho confor
onco botwoon tho master cotton
spinnors nnd oporntivos on a strike
against n roduotion of 5 porcont in
wages bold at Mnnchestor to-day ro
sultod in a disagreement. Tho striko
which began in October last has not
yot rosultod in any exhibition of bad
tompor, although it has caused a
groat deal of destitution among tho
striking operatives and workors in
trades diroctly affected by tho cot-lon-sninnintr
industry.
Tho opposing forces aro tho own-.
inc about 20.(XX).(XX) spindles and
located in a dozon or more cities and
towns in Lancashire, of which Man
chester is tho center, on ono sido;
GOjOOO operatives, including 7000
spinnors, 16,000 spinnors' assistants
and 16,000 carders on tho othor.
Tho casus belli is a reduction of 5
porcont in wages ordered by tho om
ployors, which tho operatives refuse
to accept. Tho employors, nearly
500 in number, aud including fully
half tho consumers ol raw cotton in
England, aro banded togothor under
tho name of tho Master Cotton Spin
ners' Federation. Tho operatives
aro organized as tho Amalgamated
Association of Oporativo Cotton
Spinnors and the Card and Blowing
room Operatives' Amalgamation.
It was at first thought that tho
difforonco could bo easily adjusted,
but it was soon soon that neither
sido would recede, as, whilo both
sides aro agreed that thoro is a trou
ble which needs to bo romodied, thoy
aro at variaaco as to the methods of
sottling it. Tho operatives admit
that the state ol tho maricot makes
it necessary for tho mill owners to
reduce their expenses. Thoy arguo
that tho caupo of the embarrassment
is overproduction and thoy aro quite
willing to submit to tho closing of
tho mills for one or two days a week
or auy similar arrangement. Thoy
would not complain of an oven
greater reduction of income than
their employors proposed if it wore
accompanied by corresponding de
crease in labor. As a matter of fact
tho employers wore roady to close
their mills aud tho operatives wero
anxious to take a long holiday.
Although tho spinnors had accu
mulated a big fund in order to mea
sure strength tho long continuance
of tho strike lias greatly depleted it,
and thero is now considerable ap
prohousion felt as to tho outcome of
the struggle. Tho employers still
persist that in the face of dividends,
which in man' cases do not exceed 1
porcont per annum, thoro is no in
centive for thorn to yield. Jn Old
ham, whore many millions aro in
vested in tho induslry, tho owners of
mills would gladly soil them for half
their cost.
Tho serious feature of the strug
gle is tho fact that only a compara
tively small proportion of the 60,000
operatives on strike aro provided for
by the trades unions. Tho number
of spinnors involvod is only 7000.
Thoso could afford to stick out for a
long whilo, but tho bulk of tho re
mainder have long sinco been on
short commons. The situation is
very grave, and tho failure of tho
conference to arrive at an agreement
has aroused tho fear that the discon
tent of tho strikers may manifest it
self in riotous acts, although thus
far thero have boon no signs of
trouble.

A Largo Body of Water in Mexico
Suddenly Vanishes.
DurtANao (Mox.), January 12. The
ovorland mail courier, who has ust
arrived hero from Mazatlan, brings
news of tho disappearance of Laguna
Madro, ono of tho most beautiful
shoots of water in the State of Sina
loa. This lake was about thirty
miles long and twelve milos wide.
It was situated at tho foot of tho
Sierra Madro mountains, tho sur
rounding country being devoted to
agriculture.
A few days ago several slight
earthquakes wore felt in that sec
tion. During ono of thoso disturb
aucos tho natives wore startled to
see tho water in tho lake suddenly
disappear as though tho bottom had
fallen out. Thousands of pounds of
fish wore loft on tho bed of tho lako.
This sudden disappearance of tho
water was caused by a largo crevice,
which is supposed to have been
caused by the earthquake. The
water evidently found an outlet into
tho ocean through an underground
passage Tho How from tho springs
which fed tho lako now passes into
this new outlet.
