The following ehoico bit of word painfull;
occurs in Hawthorne's Marble Faun:
" Women bo they of what earthly rank
tlioy may, how over gifted with intellect.or
genius, or endowed with awful beauty, have
always somo little handiwork ready to till

needle is familiar to tho lingers of them all.
Atnieon, no doubt, piles it on occasion; tho
woman poet can use it iw adroitly as her
pun; tho woman's eye, that has discovered
a now atar, turns from its glory to send tho
polished little Instrument gleaming along
the hem of her kerchief, or to darn a casual
fray in her dress. And they have greatly
tho advantage of us in this respect. Tho
sleudor thread of silk or cotton keeps them
united with the small, familiar, gentle in
terests of life, the continually ocr!itiiig in
fluences of which do so much for thu health
of thu character, and carry oil what would
otherwise be a dangerous accumulation of
morbid sensibility. A vast deal of human
sympathy runs along this electric line,
stretching from the throne to the wicker
ohair of the humblest suamstress, mid
keeping high and low In u species of com
munion with their kindred beings."

Somo Bcionco Stirrod Up by tho Bovo-
A lrst impression nindu by tho
proposition to anuox tlio Sandwich
Islands is that it would givo us torri
tory vory much farther West than
any which wo now possoss. Hono
lulu, tho capital, is some two thous
and miles from San Francisco. For
all that "tho Unitod States already
owns territory a groat deal fartlior
West than Honolulu. Alaska in
cludes tho Aleutian Islands, and tho
westernmost of thoso, Attoo, is 187
degrees thirty-four minutes west
from Grconwich, or to speak moro
in accordance with tho usual usage,
172 degrees twenty-sis minutes east
from Greenwich. Thus Attoo is
nearly thirty degrees of longiludo
west of Honolulu.
Tho 180th meridian from Green
wich is tho point whoro, by agree
ment of civilized nations, tho day
begins. It is known, of course, that
when it is to-day horo it may bo to
niorrow in somo places, or yesterday
in others. Tnis appears paradoxical,
and it is in a sense juggling with
words, but it has a substratum of
truth. For oxample when it is G
oVdock Monday morning afe Louis
ville, standard 'timo, b3 which wo
moan the solar time on tho !)0lh
moridian west, Tuesday is just be
ginning on tho 180th meridian. At
tho same moment it is about 4. a. m.
Monday at San Francisco and 1;IJ0
a. in. Monday at Honolulu. At tho
samo hour it is 11:30 p. m. Monday
at Attoo. In other words, when it is
6:30 a. m. Monday at Louisville and
5:30 at Now York, Tuesday is just
beginning on tho most remote of tho
islands bolouging to tho United
States. At tho samo moment it is
1:30 o'clock standard timo at tho
easternmost point in tho United
When a day ends at Attoo it is
but two hours old at Honolulu.
When tho day begins at Honolulu it
will lack but two hours of being
ended at Attoo. This may appear
strange, sinco tho difference of time
is but two hours. Tho reason is that
after beginning at Attoo tho day
must make nearly tho circuit of tho
globo boforo it roaches Honolulu.
Stated diirorently, day begins at
Attoo two hours after it begins at
Honolulu, but it is not tho same
day. If it is Monday at Honolulu it
is Tuesday at Attoo. So should wo
anuox tho Sandwich Islands wo
should possess in our two latest ac
quisitions of territory tho two gate
ways of tho da3'. Wo may bo said,
indood, to possoss them already in
tho Aleutian Islands, as tho namo of
tho day changes between two of
them; but these aro so seldom visited
and of so little commercial impor
tance that tho difforouco of timo
rarely attracts attention. Saginair,
Tail Twisters Neatly
Tho irrational conduct of SirvT-n-- ';
liau Fauncofoto in not sawSIug a
protest to tho Stato Popartmont
against tho annexation of Hawaii,
or against tho overthrow of "tho
Queen, or against the landing of -"three
hundred bluejackets" from
tho Boston, or against something, is
most oxasporating. It is character- , I
istic of British policy to do tho very f .
opposite of what tho newspaper men "a
predict. Everybody knows that f
John Bull is grinding his tooth with ,3
rago, and that tho only reason ho
has not protested is that ho is not
quite ready. This would bo a good
reason for not protesting uow, in tho
case of a Frenchman or a Dutch
man, but not for nn Englishman.
Ho ought to protest boforo ho gets
ready, because ho might burst with
indignation if ho watted long. Tho
nowspapor men might burst, too, es
pecially tho Tribune's Washington
man, who sonds moro than a column
on tho subject of Sir Julian's irra
tional behavior. A largo variety of
reasons for delay on tho part of that
loitering diplomat aro suggested,
ono of these being tho odd conceit
that it would bo best to wait for de
velopments. Thisissocontrarj-to tho
maxims of journalism that wo won-
oor now it count over liavo boon en
tertained by Sir Julian or imagined
by tho correspondent. Although
there has boon disappointing djulay
in tho filing of tho protest, wo ato
not to assume that it is not comfcg,
for, says this writer: '
"It is not by any moans to bo un
derstood that England may not pro
test. Tho cables aro in working or
der, and tho wolMuiowih.poliey of
tho British Govorniuout to-advanco
its own interests in spilo of, or ns
opposed to thoso of other countries,
has undergone no change. Sending
a 'protest is, therefore, to bo re
garded as a possibility, of course."
The policy of tho British Govern
ment in advancing its own interests
is so contrary to that of other coun
tries, which generally labor to ad
vance tlioir neighbors' interests at
tho expense of their own. that wo
may indulge in nny suspicions wo
like as to tho designs smothered hi
St Julian's breast. Our guess is
that ho is holding back his protest
in tho belief that Undo Sam's appe
tite for Hawaii will cool if ho finds
that nobody has nny objection to
his taking it. This would bo just
like tho crafty, hinister, douhlo-deal-ing
British policy. .Ycic York I'oat,
