Esthetic Progross Truly Measured
by tho Industrial Arts.
Tho following is from mi inter
esting artiolo by Alfred T. Goahorn,
on "Tho World's Fair anil Industrial
Art," in tho ourront number of tho
As a gonoral principles it may be
statod that tho culturo of a pooplo
is measured far moro accurately by tho
dogroo of dovolopmont of its indus
trial arts than by tho highor ostho
tio oxprossiong of its fino arts; sinco
thoso industries oxist for tho pur
poso of satisfying wants moro or loss
widosproad and distribute thoir pro
ducts through channels compara
tively inaccossiblo to tho groat works
of sculpture and painting. With
out tho commercial prospority as
sured by this demand manufacturers
do not long continue to produco ob
jects of arts. This is opposed to
tho oxporionco of painters and
sculptors, whoso work is frequently
so far in advanco of thoir timo that
it is encouraged noithor by financial
support nor ovon oy an miuuiguui
comprehension. The supremacy of
Franco in art and most mattors of
tasto has boon maintained through
sovoral centuries by her artisans
rathor than by hor artists. It is tho
comparatively high dovolopmont of
art industries that has in a moasuro
mado possiblo tho groat painters.
Tho groat art finds an essential
foundation in tho loss. Nor can wo
oxpoct a healthy support of Amer
ican artists by American buyers of
paintings until from porsistont con
tact with multitudinous products oi
art industry our pooplo shall havo
acquired not only spasmodically
sound ideas of beauty applied in
simple forms, but ovon moro than
this the habitual association with
things possessing osthotic iutorost,
to tho point that thoir absonco will
bo to a degree painful.
To secure material advance in in
dustrial art in this country wo need
moroj extensive provision for techni
cal training in schools, that wo may
prepare hero, as is done in Europe,
skilled workmen and superintend
ents who will bo fitted to direct
intelligently tho operation ol com
mon laborors. I mean schools for
immediate instruction in the pro
cesses omployod in tho applied arts;
schools for the teaching not only of
drawing, painting and modeling as
fino arts, but of decorative art in all
its applications, and for technical
and scientific training in tho purely
mechanical processes of tho art.
"Further, a different conception of
tho value and dignity of tho applied
arts must bo cultivated among our
young mon and women who aro seek
ing occupation in art. A largo num
ber of purely art schools aro now
firmly established, and aro prosper
ing in many cities throughout tho
land. They are crowded with stu
dents, especially women, ambitious
to become artists, pursuing arts with
a restless hope of success and fame,
to be won somehow or other, rathor
than that porsistont search for truth,
and the means of expressing it when
found, which is characteristic of a
real artist. It is a natural impossi
bility that all, or even a respectable
minority of those students can be
come artists whose works shall havo
any permanent worth as fine art.
Gradually year by year some drop
out of the race, to teach; or to aban
don art altogether. How much
moro satisfactory to themselves, and
how much moro useful to tho com
munity, if thoir activity could lie
continued in tho applied arts, for tho
training in drawing and painting al
ready received would especially help
them in tho study of industrial art
in some appropriate school. So far
as remuneration for decorative work
is concerned, it is on tho average far
bettor than in tho painting of third
and fourth rate pictures, or tho
modeling of statues no one caros to
soo a Bocond timo. If we aro to carry
our industrial arts much in advanco
of thoir present state stops must bo
taken in this direction of raising tho
study of applied art to a higher
piano. In no other way can we se
cure a corps of trained designers,
and skilled artisans.
