"Tho efforts that have been made
during tho last lifly years to purify
tho stage have been so far successful
that now nothing is more exception
al than to hear anything immoral or
offensive at our beat theaters. Ou
the extremely rare occasions when 1
have boon able to visit a theater 1
have not only wituossed the noblo
Shakespearean revivals of Mr.
Charles Kean and Mr. Irving, but I
have seen modern plays absolutely
innocent and morally elevating. Tho
clergy including thoir highest dig
nitaries have heartily welcomed tho
endeavor to rescue lroin misuse by
the world, the Uosh and the dovil a
form of recreation which may in it
self bo elevating and salutary. But

sented iu plays which, as a whole,
could not iu 11113' sense bo regarded
tis sacred, and uuder co'iiiitious
which might bo much tho revorso,
there are a few earnest Christians ,
who would not feel themselves de
barred from lending any counte
nance to that which many would re-
gaid and iu some instances rightly
regard as a shocking and positive
piofauation." -The AVu lie view,
