of history, geography, otc. Cards,
as wo know thorn, aro but modifica

designed to assist tho memory by
giving localities to ideas. Somo in
vestigators assort that tho colors of
tho cards aro typical of tho two
oquinoxos; that tho four suits answer
to tho four soasous; that somo coun
tries, Spain for one, still uso a cup
for tho heart, that boing tho em

acorn, tho emblem of autumn; for
tho olub, a trofoil, moaning summer;
and for tho diamond, a rose, signify
ing spring. Tho twolvo court cards
aro supposed to rofor to tho months,
anu lormeriy wcro represented, with
tho twolvo signs of tho zodiac. Tho
entire pack fifty-two cards auswor
to tho numbor of weeks in a year;
tho thirtoon cards in each suit make
tho number of weeks in oach lunar
quarter, aud tlio aggregato of the
spots on tho cards makes tho num
ber of days in a year. Tho four
kings aro intouded to ropresont tho
Groek, Roman, Jewish and Turkish
monarchies. Tho queous wore ori
ginally intended to represent Esther,
Argiue, Judith aud Pallas. Tho
nine of diamonds is called tho "Curso
of Scotland," for. which several rea
sons aro assigned.
In Ireland tho six of hearts is
called the "Graco-'s Card," from tho
spirited answer returned by one of
that family to Marshal Schomborg,
who thought to induce Graco to
ospouso tho cause of William 111.
"Toll your master," ho wrote on
tho back of tho card, "that I despise

"Hob Collingwood" is tho North
Country title for tho four of hearts,
which all spinsters consider to 1)0
especially unlucky. Tho sailors
know tho four of clubs as tho
"Devil's Bedposts," but exactly why
tho card is so called no one seems to
know. In old times tho Spanish
used columbines for spades, pictures
of rabbits for clubs, pinks (ilowors)
for diamonds and roses for hearts.
Tho word "spades" is from tho
Spanish, espados, moaning swords;
"clubs" is from the Spanish, bastos,
or cudgels; "diamonds" is from tho
Spanish for squares (dincros), and
the word "hearts" from copas
Iclialices, seo "cup" above. Tho
kings personifiod aro David, Alex
ander, Ciesar .and Charlomagno.
Tho "court cards" aro so called be
cause of thoir heraldic dross. Ori
ginally the king of clubs represented
tho arms of tho Popo; of spades, tho
King of the Franks; of diamonds,
the King of Spain, and of hearts,
tho King of England. St. Louis
Prayers for the Queen.
Rcpuhlished by request from Honolulu
Thorohas been somo misunder
standing relative to tho omission of
tho State Pra3'ors in St. Andrew's
Cathedral, and othor churches of
the Anglican communion, since the
establishment of tho Provisional
Government. The prayers for the
King or Queen in tho Book of Com
mon Prayer aro for the Sovereign as
tlio omcial Jioau ol all authority m
the realm. Her Majesty, Queen
Liliuokalani, having yielded hor su
preme authority to tho Provisional
Government under appeal to tho
Government at Washington, it was
clearly inappropriate for tho church
in her public prai'ors to continue to
pray for Her Majesty in hor official
capacity. Tho necessity, however,
of thus omitting the appointed pray
ers for the Queen, in the public ser
vice, did not carry with it any dis
couragement, much less exclusion
of prayer for the Queen person
ally in private or family worship.
It was never intended to bo under
stood that members of tho Anglican
Church were restrained from praying
for the Quoon, and for her restora
tion to tho throne. Without breach
of due loyalty to tho present govern
ment, which by its own title is only
"Provisional," such prayer may bo
offered by all, who wish to seo tlio
Sovereignty of Hawaii and Constitu
tional Government preserved. Tho
calm and dignified manner in which
tho Quoon has committed hor cause
to God, trusting to tho justice of tho
Government of tho United Statos, is
worthy of tho highest praiso. So too
has boon tho conduct of tho natives,
who, abiding by tho counsels of Hor
Majesty, wait patiently for tho restor
ation of thoir flag and tho restora
tion of the throne. Hawaii has not
lost tho power of self government,
as a Sovereign State, nor is tho
monarchy offoto. Lot us trust that
when tho machinations, to which tho
Quoon succumbed, aro investigated,
truth and justice will prevail, and a
united loyal pooplo will again bo
able to say without lot or.hindrauco,
God Save the Queen.
