Our Optical Department still
goes along in the even tenor of Us
way despite all opposition. Every
day we fit somebody cither with a
pair of Eyeglasses for 25c, and
once in a while we get as high as
$2.00. We can't 'go higher be
cause that is the best pair of crys
tals you, can buy and why pay
more? The reason is that we do
not need any special iuo weeks'
studu of the question because our
instrument, the EYEMETER, is
so simple that Us test is absolute.
Doesn't matter if your eyes arc
myopic, astigmatic or any other

every time.

A largo doublc-deckod trnmcar
gliding along tho street at a smart
but clmnging pace, without any ap
parent moans of propulsion, isa
sight which, howovor familiar in
soiuo provinoial towns and in Am
erica, is rathor now to Londouors.
Tho sonant ion to tho pedestrian who
suddenly observes the sight for tho
first time in tho midst ofhis consti
tutional is Fomowhat oorio; and if it
is a little mysterious and creeping to
men, what must it bo for tho horses,
n good many of which are soizod
with an urgent desiro to put as long
n bpaco as possible between them
selves and tho uncanny machine. It
ought to be, but porhaps it iS not,
superfluous to explain that thoso are
cable-trams, and that the sight wo
have suggested is now to bo seen
every day between Keuuingtou
Church and Streatham Hill, tho
regular running of the ears having
commenced on Monday. Hitherto
tho only cable-tramway in Loudon
lias been that of Highgato Hill, which
dates from 1881; but somehow tho
methods seems not to have taken
the fancy of the London tramway
companies perhaps because they
looked askance nt tho initial cost.
There is an airy coming-race sort of
a look about a tramcar hauled by
cable which is pleasing to tho esthe
tic sense. Tho passenger's feelings
are no longer harrowed by the know
ledge that every stoppage means a
nail in tho horse's colli n, nor aro his
senses of sight and smell violated by
the hideous snorting monsters call
ed' steam trams. St. James Gazelle.
