Our Optical Department still
goes along in the even tenor of its
way despite all opposition. Every
day we jit somebody cither with a
pair of Eyeglasses for 85c, and
once in a while we get as high as
$2.00. We can't go higher be
cause that is the best pair of crys
tals you can buy and why pay
more? The reason is that we do
not need any special two weeks'
stud of the aucslion because our
instrument, the EYEMETER, is
so simple that its test is absolute.
Doesn't matter if your eyes arc
myopic, astigmatic or any other
attic, that instrument gets there

Tho Doom of the Annexation Plot.
The withdrawal of tho Hawaiian
treaty soals its doom, Tho sobor
second thought will kill it. It can
not stand investigation, and wo shall
bo just a littlo surprised if its origi
nators over permit it to bo subnnt
tod to a searching vontilation on tho
spot wlioro it was hatchod. It would
bo dropped in proforonco to that
boing permitted. Whon tho glamour
of tho hour in favor of tho acquisi
tion of territory, a lazarotto though
it bo, has passod away, and sobor
facts bocomo of some account, thoro
will uo an awakening to tno truth
that tho schomo for tho annexation
of thoso distant islands novor had
any morit. They contain nothing
that wo had not hotter bo without.
Wo cor-tainly do not want thoir
chamol-houBO at Molokai, nor thoir
thousands of loporg still at largo.
Neither tho expense, nor tho respon
sibility of acting as a nursiug-mothor
to a decaying and doomed race, is to
bo hankered aftor by pooplo with
delicate stomachs: especially as that
raco desires nothing so much as to
do its own nursing and to bo loft
alouo to do it. For morcy's sake, and
in tho name of roal philanthropy,
thoy should bo permitted to havo
their way. Let us do unto them as
wo would havo others do unto us.
I under liko circuinstancos. Wo do
not want tho labor contracts of tho
islands, nor do wo want tho in
dustry that would perish if it
wore not for such contracts. Wo
do not want to almost double
California's Chinese, hordes; for that
is what wo should do if wo took in
Hawaii. It is idlo to say that wo
could by law oxeludo thorn. Thoy
would bo residents of a portion of
tho United States, and our Supremo
Court would have to hold that thoy
could not be denied tho right to visit
other portions at their pleasure.
That is tho express guarantee of tho
treaty with China that no ex post facto
law can abrogate. Wo do not want
to pa' tho handful of American,
English, and Gorman plautors in tho
islands, souio ton or twelve millions
of dollars a year for tho privilege of
paying tho full market rates for their
sugar. Nor do we want to give them
an iutorest in corrupting our politics
to savo thoir bounty. Wo do not, or
at least, ought not to want to give
tho go-by to tho Monroo doctrine, or
to lauim at tho advico of Goorcro
Washington, or to revorso the poli
cy of the Fathers that has stood the
test of a hundred years of happy ex
perience, or to appropriate a friend
ly neighbor's property; which, in
this case, happens to bo Queen Li
liuokalaui's Kingdom and the right
of hor people to tho pursuit of
happiness in a way that in no man
ner infringes upon ours. The one
thing wo want from. Hawaii wo have
got. We want a safe rondozvous for
our ships of war. Pearl Harbor has
boon ours for years, but we seem in
no hurry to either occupy or fortify
it. San Fruncisco News Letter.
Somo smart alock to try and stop
my passport, ns I am about to loavo

It appears to take just a dash or
two from the pon of Mr. Nordhoff,
